I've been wondering, why do you think manufacturers don't commonly offer a single axle utility trailer with say a 7K axle as found on the 14K tandems?

It would seem that a properly built one could handle a 5K load, be easier to move around in tight spaces and save quite a bit on tolls if you have to deal with that.

I asked that when I bought a trailer directly from a manufacturer in Sikeston, MO and they told me that the actual trailer frame would have to be much heavier with more bracing to support the load with just one axle and the net carrying rating would be severely impacted. Tandem axle trailers are always bad at scrubbing the rear tires when making sharp turns; especially the dual tandem models. I can't vouch for the validity of that answer, but it is what I was told by one manufacturer.

it'd be illegal her ein fl for sure. DOT pulls lots of guys over with loads that look heavy.. non comercial vehicles too.. ie.. guys hauling overhanging limbs in a squatted lawnmower trailer.. etc.

i imagine the fine is not pretty.. nor is it a safe way to haul. If I were an insurance carrier and somebody had an accident hauling like that.. and it produced excess liability. I think I'd sue not to pay the claim based on gross negligence of the driver...

Exactly. That is why it is extremely dangerous, and illegal, to haul cars around on a 6.5'x12' landscape/utility trailer with a single 3500 pound axle and no brakes. I do not intend to be rude, but I care not what qualifications that poster says they have. Facts are facts, and that is in no way, shape or form even remotely safe or advisable. It actually reminds me of some of the crazy pictures we've all seen in emails with someone hauling their 4 wheeler on the luggage rack of their Taurus or the guy with the wood hitch on the back of an S10 Blazer for a gooseneck trailer. Just because someone has done it, and so far not killed anyone, doesn't mean it's a good idea. On the above mentioned reference, don't take my word for it, call any DOT office or look up any rules governing trailers in any state.

As you said, utility/landscape trailers are made with much lighter materials and the angle framing above the deck is actually needed for support; and that's on utility trailers rated for 7,000 pounds with two axles and brakes. A car trailer has a much stronger frame, generally brakes on both axles, and side pockets that allow you to use 2X4's to drop in and make your own side rails if you like. A 16' trailer would be the absolute minimum I would consider for hauling all but the smallest sub-compact cars. A good quality 16' car trailer that can also be a good utility trailer isn't much more money than a utility trailer anyway.

Cost. You can buy 4 3,500# axles with tires and brakes for the cost of one 7,000# axle. Plus it would have to sit higher. The smallest tire that will handle that load is a 235 on 16" wheels.

Another reason like Dargo stated is the strength needed of the frame. The pressure would be concentrated on one area versus spread out over the area of two axles.

I figured it might be that the frame would have to be heavier with only one axle supporting, but wow, 4 3,500# axles, 8 tires and 8 brakes for the cost of 1 7,000# axle with tires and brakes, that's a shock.

I can get 3,500# axle for $164 with brakes. Without brakes $106. 7,000# axle with brakes is $380. The kicker is the tires and wheels. I can get 15" wheel and tire for $80 each for a 3,500# axle while the 16" and tire needed for a 7,000# is $193

So 2 3,500# rollers is $648

One 7,000# roller is $766

I may have exaggerated a bit but as you can see its more expensive. That is putting brakes on both 3,500# axles but for most 7K trailers you only have brakes on the rear axle so that would lower the cost to $590.

I have never seen a state that has ALL Axles on the brakes requirement. I am sure there may be but in the 15 or so states I deal with I have never seen it.

Here is a copy of the law from a towing book I have. Says nothing about all axles but its by no means the "bible", just a guide.

Hey Chris, did you know that in IN you need to take your license plate off the back of a dump truck? Seriously! You're supposed to take it off and put it on the front. For dump trucks you only put a license plate on the front of the truck. Being this is a state where I'm not really aware of any vehicle that requires plates on the front of vehicles, this seems like a new odd law. I asked at least 3 times if I don't need a plate on the front and the back, and was assured front only at the BMV.

Here's some info on brake laws for the various states. The way I interpret this is that a few states require brakes on all axles, but most just require that brakes be on the trailer.

I had heard that. I drove the neighbors C60 yesterday hauling 3 loads for him. It has the plate on the back still...
