Buying advice for those purchasing tractor/mower

I would suggest selling the MMM and getting a RFM or bushhog that you can set up higher. 3-3/4" is not very high for something that is not going to be mowed on a regular basis, and you are right that another 2" would be quite helpful. I only have just over an acre but most of it is unimproved field that is too bumpy to mow with my lawn with my 33" self propelled walk behind at any speed. I talked the wife into a Yanmar 186d that came with a RFM to mow the field once a month or so. 5" is the max height of the gauge wheels, but that is enough that at 8-10" tall the mower won't plug and we just let the clippings lay. If it goes longer, I can set height with 3ph. It does not look like lawn, but a couple days after mowing it looks like a nice field, and it's a lot less work.

I mow a 4.5 acre yare area with my Deere 4210/60 inch 7-Iron MMM combination. When I purchased my machine back near the end of 2002, it was after careful research and comparison between several brands and models. The salesguy I finally purchased from was someone I knew from a prior purchase, so I trusted him when he told me my choice of mowing decks would cut "up to 6 inches in height". Well, what he didn't tell me was that height was only possible with the larger 4310/4410 models fitted with that deck, and my 4210 will only cut 3 3/4 inches maximum height with the deck raised as high as possible.

Even when fitted with new Gator mowing blades, my deck does a poor job of chopping up clippings even when the grass I mow only gets to 6 inches height before it is cut. During last month (May 2011) it rained 23 out of 31 days where I live, and there was an actual measured 16 inches of rainfall here. I went out and measured the area that I mowed less than a week and a half ago, and parts of the grass are already 12-13 inches high again already, because of the constant rain. I basically spend more time raking up and disposing of the clippings than I do mowing, most weeks.

Had I known my choice of tractor/mmm had such limited height of grass cutting, I would cheerfully have spent the extra money for the larger 4310 model with the extra 2 inches of cutting height ability. I am not trying to bash Deere, or the salesman, because I should have inquired about the cutting height before I finalized my purchase. If this information helps just one buyer avoid the issue I have endured, I consider the time spent composing this thread well spent. TAKE HEED !!!

Oh, and for what it is worth, after over 850 hours of ownership, this is the only gripe I have about my green machine.
You and I both know that 16 inches of rain in a month is a very rare occurance.

So the 'real' reason for this posting..............is to get a new tractor. You just want to justify the decision before you talk to wifey-poo.

If'n ya want a new tractor, we're all for it ...........just post pics please.

But if'n ya follow Al Gore...............forget the tractor, and buy a rowboat...........cause global warming is gonna cause the sea levels to rise, and only Noah will survive:laughing:

Cutting at a maximum of 3 3/4" height is less than I would have thought, at least both of my riders will cut higher. I also find that in most cases cutting tall grass of any kind will leave larger clippings but if the grass is growing as quickly as you say it should look okay in a day or two.

All things considered including the large quantity of rain you have had the 4210 with 60" 7iron deck should be a good mowing rig. Just a suggestion but I think I would look around at other projects that might need money and attention instead.:D
