What are you planning to do with the tractor ? If you are doing lots of loader work, or backing a rotaty cutter in and out of heavy brush, a hydro trans is worth it's weight in gold. Depending on your money situation you may want to consider going with a new tractor. NH has very good interest rates on new equipment. So it depends on how you plan to purchase the used tractor, cash sale vs. signature loan vs. NH fiancing. You may only be talking severals dollars a month used vs. new.

clearing area around 5-7 acre lake and and setting up about 3acres for homesite. Dozer and trak work already complete on 3 acres. Will be mowing, spreading wood chips and gravel drive, pulling vines, leveling and planting grass, tree maintenance, moving wood, landscaping, maybe move a bale now and then. Thousand other things I hope.
Started by borrowing a L2800 (gear) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifand decided I had to have one. Looked at a few new but think I dont want to pass on the TC40. Its the most tractor I've found for around 15k and since I dont want to finance the savings is considerable. Research looks positive and spoke to previous owner that spoke highly. He traded in for Massey cab w/ powershuttle. He likes it but missed the NH , so did his wife. She preffered it to the new one.
I drove the MF PS1540 and liked it, but at $19,600 I am making a move on the NH . Feels like better value to me.
Only other issue...The Bota L2800hst.... new at 15,500
Smaller tractor but HST and new.
Everybody keeps telling me "buy bigger than I think I want"
is HST and warranty worth giving up the size. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That's a great deal, and you should have already bought it. You will love the well thought through ergonomics of the NHs. After a few hours on it, you will appreciate that. The SS is a breeze to operate, and very user friendly with the placement of the control levers. What a deal, if it was closer, I'd buy it out from under you! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You will not lose a thing on that tractor if you decide later that you just have to have an HST. It's already had all its depreciation and you have solid evidence that the former owner really loved it. I'd say you can't go wrong. Get it quickly.

Thanks for all the tips ! Great site.
I thought this was my best option also, so I went and made the deal this morning.

From trusted dealer 5 miles away.
03 New Holland TC40a 4wd /synchroshuttle w/16LA FEL
Its an 03 with 375hrs

Includes
17.5 loaded R4s
skid steer quick attach on the FEL
FOP canopy
6mnth drivetrain warranty

I also requested a few extras after I found a couple small problems.
Actually the dealer mentioned the gear shift seemed a little stiff between 1 & 2 and agreed to correct before I even got a little more seat time. On my second test drive I seemed to quickly pick up on the tranny system even with the shift a tad sticky put it through all the ranges and gears at 1500rpm then 2600. Checked out all FEL,PTO,4wd,tires.
Clutch felt good and I really got the hang of syncro.
Checked all electrical and lights.

Found
Aftermarket battery not mounted, battery had side clamps and NH clamps to ends.missing 1 clamp
needed top link drawbar
couple loose bolts on FEL mount .
sticky gear shifter
I requested repair as well as full fluid/lube/filter service, xtra key, manual, at least an hr overview on use/maintenance with a mechanic, free delivery, and I added a new 6' box
Final price $15,100
I'll have it tomorrow.
