Hey folks. Just bought 20 acres and want to plant about 5 acs in corn, maybe another 5 in another vegetable and a couple acs in fruit trees. Will also have about a 1.5 ac yard to mow and a road to keep scraped. What type, size tractor would you guys recommend? I was looking at a JD 4200. I don't need new. Would be just as happy with used.

To run a planter and some other things you're going to need a little more hp in my opinion. I'd look at the 4600 or 4700. With that tractor you're not going to run out of hp and you'll be able to do whatever you need to.

The first tractor I had was a 755. I pulled my 2 row planter with out any problems. Now I have a 4300, I still pull the planter the same speed, but other tasks are faster than the 20 hp 755.

I don't think he's trying to fill a silo with 5 acres. Besides, slower just might pay off in quality.

I've never used that small of a planter so I'm not sure what it would take. On my planter, it's a 12 row, speed is critical. You neither go too fast or too slow. Your speed has to match whatever it is that you're planting. With mine it still takes me a little over a half hour per acre when I plant corn. I was just doing some quick figuring in my head and was thinking it would take four hours to do it with a two row and multiply that by 5 and you're talking 20 hours to plant five acres.

This is starting to feel like some kind of digital phone tag. The man says he has 5 acres. He also said used tractors would mayby fill the bill. 20 hours is less than a day if your power napping in the shed. If he wants more sleep than that I would suggest the JD4400 and as many rows as he can afford. Unless he needs them to mature at different times then I say walk it out and spend the money on a second honeymoon. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
I remember an old friend doing 50 acres of confection white wheat with a 2 banger Kubota when some were still trying to pronounce Toyota. Turf tires to boot. Blew up an old JD45 combine to harvest it. On southern faced benches with a pucker factor of 9.99 on the JD45. Never did get the value out of that 21' new belt on the side.
