Anyone on this forum buy from Barlows from New York area? I'm just curious because I'm about to purchase atractor from Barlows. So I was wondering about not having to pay the tax on the tractor being out of state and any run into problems?

You are supposed to report it.

Buy it from Barlows and don't worry about the tax. Living in NY you pay way too much already. Stanley

You are ethically & legally required to report out of state purchases. However there is no method for a state to track out of state purchases unless they require vehicle/tractor registration. You have virtually no chance of any repercussions.

Several years ago, when we lived in Maryland, my wife ordered a truckload of furniture "direct" from North Carolina. At the first Maryland weigh station Maryland transportation officials copied the bill of lading from the trucker. Ten days after the furniture was delivered we received an accurate invoice for the sales tax owed.

No taxes in delaware on sales, maybe you could drive there and get one?

You are still obligated to pay New York taxes on crossing the New York border.

I have a BIL that worked for the State Police and his job was to drive around and look for motorhomes with out of state license plates and bust them for not licensing in the State he lived which had high property tax rates. The SOB thought he was doing society a favor. The guy sucked up every overtime opportunity he could find to increase his retirement. I have no use for this type of scum. And, no I did not have a motorhome. It was the principal of how he thought he could bust people for tax evasion yet, suck up overtime while loafing off. He even had an affair on his wife while on duty and getting paid for it. Scum.

Barlows was great to deal with and you cannot beat their prices and expertise. They are very knowledgeable about what they sell.

Just playing devil's advocate here - several people are quick to add that you need to pay the sales tax. That rule also applies to all online purchases (Amazon, eBay, etc.) doesn't it? Are you reporting all of those purchases in your tax returns as well?

Good point. The Gubbamint tax supporters likely buy on line and don't pay taxes like the rest of us.

I have a friend who lives in Canada. He often comes down here to buy stuff to avoid the taxes. Equipment like a tractor he would unload, go and play in the mud to get it dirty, then load it back up. For smaller items he would take them out of the packaging and make it look used. If it was small he would just say he bought it at a garage sale, if large he would get bill of sale saying he paid a lot less than he did for it. As far as I know he never got caught. Not really sure what they could do other than say he owed more taxes.

As for buying a tractor from Barlows, if you pay cash there's not going to be a record of the sale. If you finance it then Kubota credit will want to put a lien on it and could file paperwork with the town, county, or state documenting the lien.

There is a UCC filing if you finance. We have had a handful of customers have to pay the tax because of that. Odds are slim though.

I'm not in New York, but I did purchase from Barlow's and saved a pile of money and had a great transaction.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.
