BX 18-24 Skid Plate

   / BX 18-24 Skid Plate #12
Drove up this morning to pick 1 up for my BX23. Installation instructions were excellent and complete. Product was quite easy to install and should not take more than 1 hour. One hint that I discovered after talking to the builder. If you have an air operated drill, it will fit in between the frame with no problems. I didn't, so I had to cut an inch and a quarter off the drill bit in order to fit the drill between the frame at right angles. I have attached a picture of the completed job.

Here is another shot of my completed install showing the two holes that need to be drilled in the frame.

Why is it not built to use the existing holes in the frame right next to where the new holes are drilled? You can see the other holes in your picture.

Good question, Here is my answer; The newer model of BX 1830 & 2230 used this hole is for the Cruise control. On the other side, it's being used in all BX. This was the best solution, 5/16 holes are very minor.

I ain't no engineer or mechanic (but I already know from experience that I need a skid plate). What kind of drill am I going to need for this job? Something tells me my cordless drill ain't up to the task.

I had no problem drilling thru the frame with my 18V Milwaukee, however, as I mentioned in a previous post, I had to cut about an inch and a quarter off the 5/16 bit in order to fit the drill between the frame at right angles. Also, drilling a 7/32 pilot hole first will make the job a lot easier. Depends on what you have for cordless drill I guess. I do not think my Makita 9.6 volt cordless would have done the job either.

Hi Rick,

The power of the drill is not the concern, it's more to do with the total lenght.
The drill & bit has to go between the frame, they should not be longer than 12 & 1/2".

Photo shows the battery drill, it's a bit to long (Solution: Chop down the bit).
A good air drill or a 90 angle drill will works great for this.
Hope this helps.
Bird
