BX 2200 Rough Starting

Well......That's great. I'll be bringing my machine into the dealer ASAP to have the glowplugs checked out. --Never reallly thought that could be a problem with a new machine. If I have the same problem the plugs never worked from day one.

Looks like Art had the correct solution.
Great going Art, it's obvious you've been around diesel machinery for a long time.

jim; NOT REAL FAMILAR WITH BX2200, but i have a b2400 and i also live in a cold area, just yesterday i had to move snow, temp about 16 deg(tractor in garage) and 10 sec. on glow plugs and she starts right up. leave my throttle set at about 1100 rpms and she just gives one little puff of smoke and settlels right down. never have to crank it more than a few sec.

This sounds a lot like the way my BX has been acting since I got it in April. I went back right after getting it and described it to the dealer, and he said to let the glow plugs go for 30 seconds. That seemed to basically clear up the problem at the time (it still didn't seem right, but a subsequent trip/question and they said it was "normal"). Now that things are a bit colder, it seems to be starting real rough.

So, it seems I may have the same problem. It is difficult for me to take it back to the dealer to have them look at it. Is there some way I can check the glow plugs myself? If I'm sure they are a problem, I will bite the bullet and take it to them to fix.

I just took delivery of a BX2200 last week. It had not been started for three days, temp 30 degrees. I used the glow plug for 15 sec. and it fired right up. Clattered for a few seconds and then smoothed out. I'm still trying to get used to the clatter at startup! My previous tractors had gas engines.

The Operator's Manual for the BX2200 on page 19 says to use the Glow Plugs for 2 to 3 seconds above 32 degrees F, 5 sec. for 32-23F and 10 sec. for 23-5F. They recomend a block heater for temps below 5degrees. I paid $75.00 for a block heater installed when I bought my BX2200 because it gets cold here in Southeast Iowa and they claim it can increase the life of your diesel. I thought the price was worth it. I would think that using the glow plugs for extended periods of time will shorten their life. They also tell you not to turn your starter continuously for more than 30 seconds at a time. If you price a new starter for one of these machines you will probably decide to take care of it. I believe if I were having the types of starting problems you are having my tractor would be in the dealers shop until it would start per Operator's Manual. As far as the dealer telling you that something is normal, I would tell them that what the manual says is the normal. If not then Kubota should change the manual. If your tractors are still under warranty then get them repaired before that warranty runs out. I know it can be a problem to get your equipment to a dealer but whatever it cost now will multiply greatly after the warranty runs out and you have to take it in for the same problems you are having now. Let Kubota pay the big expense now. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

cpicton1,

I definitely don't disagree. If there is no reasonable way for me to check it, I will just take it in and show them what it's doing (hopefully it will still do it then). The other reason I would like to know myself is that I know little about diesel engines and I would feel much more confident in dealing with the dealer if I had something I could tell him (like: I tried doing X, and the result was Y). It eliminates the "it's normal" response, which my dealer may or may not try to give me again. From experience with problems with other items, it seems that an awful lot of service people would much rather lie to you than do something they don't want to. Just my cynical view of the world showing.
