I guess I overtightened my oil bolt when changing my oil yesterday. I would greatly appreciate any options that may be available. Thanks Brad

Hi I think most auto store care a rubber plug with a phillip screw that expands when tightened.

Did you strip the pan threads or just the bolt. Quit often you can run a tap in and out and then get a new bolt and it will work just fine. If the pan threads are shot then you might be able to drill out and tap to next size up or just replace the pan. I have little faith in the rubber plugs. I would hate to trust a $5000 engine to a rubber plug and have it fall out.

Take it to your local NAPA store. The next available size you may be able to retap the hole. Even buying a drill and tap is cheaper than replacing the pan or removing to weld in a new thread boss.

Ron

I second that!

Agree....whatever you do don't try one of those quick fix rubber plugs....not a good idea. At worst case drill and tap, but if you do buy yourself a few quarts of el-cheapo oil (well no such thing anymore but you get the idea) and put a half quart in, then drain....do that a few times, I would also get the biggest magnet you can and put that right next to the hole to try to attract the shavings from drilling..biggest meaning strongest magnet. You don't want even the little bit of metal sloshing around in there.

Or drill it and heli-core it. Oil drain plugs don't need to wrenched down with a 3/4 breaker bar. Snug is fine.

Heli-coils have always worked well on all auto & motorcycle applications I've used them on - as long as it's done right. A little dab of J&B Weld around the hole before you insert the coil also works if used sparingly - don't get any on the new "threads". Do run some cheap oil a few times through to find and get rid of any metal shavings and invest in a good magnet oil plug to help hold any shavings still swimming around. Or if possible, take the oil pan off and do it on the workbench - less likely to introduce any shavings to the system at all. Just need to buy a new gasket. Good luck, KW

If it is a popular thread size there are such things as oversized plugs that will self tap the holes also.
