All of a sudden all hydraulics died and when I looked under it the tranny oil was just pouring out. I thought it would be easy enough to fix, get a new filter more oil and all would be set but I can't get the filter to seat and it continues to leak. Depending on the contact of the filter to the receiving end it either foams out or just pours out. I've changed plenty of oil filters over the years and can't figure out what is wrong. The threads on the tractor seem fine, the metal surface the rubber ring on the filter presses against is perfectly smooth. I've tried tightening a little, half a turn after contact is recommended in the book, and a lot and it still keeps leaking. I don't think I hit anything as there is no mark on the old filter but I could have. Any ideas on how to get this on?
Thanks!!!

Any chance the "impact" bent the pipe nipple that the filter screws onto? Maybe check with a square?

Did you hit anything? Was a MMM on it or something? Or is it possible that the wrong filter was given to you?? If the threads are wrong on the filter it might not seat....

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. Great idea for the square. I'll check with one in the AM. I will check the filter but it was from a Dealer and seemed to be the same one as the one on the tractor when it happened. Doing the work I was doing I could have hit something or pressed up against something that bent the pipe nipple so I'm hoping that it is a little out of square. What do you mean by MMM?

If sverything else appears ok.......gasket, pipe nipple, etc. and hyd. fluid iis still leaking past the filter I'd say that it sounds like some kind of a high pressure problem with the system.

MMM = mid mount mower.
Were you mowing with a MMM when it happened? (The MMM will generally deflect away anything that would damage the filter or HST cooling fan).
-or-
Was the work you were doing around alot of sticks, branches, rocks etc and you didn't have a MMM installed? (without a MMM or skidplate installed, the filter makes an easy target to get damaged).

It helps when troubleshooting to know the scenerio surrounding what the machine was doing and how it was equipped.

Theres been several instances posted here of branches etc getting up into and damaging the hydraulic filter. Sometimes a filter change fixed it and other times the threaded pipe that the filter secures to got bent and had to be repaired.

Theres the possibilty of your pressure relief valve malfunctioning causing a huge increase in hydro pressure but you should see other hydro devices leaking if this were the case.

Good luck

Sorry for the delay in answering but between travel and rain I just got out there again this AM. I put on 2 different filters about 5 times and the same thing happens each time. Start the motor and everything is good for a couple seconds. Then you can actually see the filter vibrate from side to side, it then pops out a tiny bit and oil sprays everywhere. On about the 5th time I got covered in oil as it sprayed right at me so I'm back inside. I did a search on pressure relief valve and couldn't find any similar problem. I thought that possibly the nipple would be bent but best I can tell using a small square it looks fine. Neither the nipple or filter thread seem damaged and after I take a filter off there are no filings or anything as if they are shaving off each time I try putting it on. Any ideas before I call the dealer and have them haul it off to the shop?
Thanks to all for your help

For some reason the pressure in the hydraulic system is too high, and the filter gasket can't contain this high pressure. I suggest that you give this problem to the dealer to resolve. There is a pressure adjustment on the hydro system, and it is my guess that some part of that has failed and allows the transmission to build up too much pump pressure. The other thing might be a lever, such as the 3 point hitch lever that is stuck in a position that is restricting return flow to the transmission. There are too many different possibilities to diagnose this long distance. Let the dealer check it. Be careful not to put your hands or any body parts in direct contact to high pressure hydraulic fluid. Permanent injury can and will result.

I'm with Dusty. This is a dealer issue. At least you can tell him what you've done and eliminate some things for him.
