bx-23 back hoe question

I have posted before about my inexperience with the hoe. Since then I have done a few simple projects. I have been running somewhere around half throttle just to take it easy on the machine while it is breaking in. Given my experience level, this speed works for me. When I was digging out some small stumps, I would go up to just about full throttle to give it that little extra pull needed to convince the stump to come out after some of the dirt had been cleared away, then back down to half again. It works for me. I see no need yet to be up at full throttle for the way I work. I am in no hurry anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When digging I run mine at about 2600 rpm most of the the time. Running faster does not seem to increase power or speed. If I am not in a hurry and trying to do precision digging I run it slower. Full throttle just makes a lot of noise and makes the left right swings hard to control. The hoe simply has enough power to drag the whole machine around anyway I would rather stall the hoe than drag the tractor.

If you read the different posts, some backhoes seem more productive at less than WOT than others. Can the hydraulic fluid level effect the outcome?

Speaking of which, can someone point out where to check this. Have 37 hours and never checked this level. I do grease ever 10.

Attached is a pic of where the dipstick is on the BX23. It's described in the owner's manual on p. 64 "Checking Transmission Fluid Level". The same fluid is used for all the hydraulics (backhoe, transmission, etc.).

I think that if you read between the lines, it means that everybody has his own habits. IMO BX23 backhoes are all the same. The difference is between the seat and the joysticks. If you feel ok to run the engine at mid throttle when you're using your backhoe that's fine... others run it at full that's ok too.

Can't tell you a rpm because I don't have a tach either. I sure don't run anywhere near full throttle. Yeah, your controls work a lot faster at higher rpm's, but it's too herky jerky for me, especially swinging the boom side to side. I've played with mine a bit, & I don't claim to be an expert but I'm more comfortable around half throttle. If you get a smooth operation at full, have at it. I'd just be wasting fuel.
