Hey, you BX people..

I'm interested in what engine RPM you run while mowing, and while using a rear PTO. I'm used to the L series where you can get a readout of the PTO speed. I'm not sure how that translates into Engine RPM. The manual rates HP at 3200 rpm.. but says nothing about where to run it with PTO implements. I guess with the mower it's where your comfortable. But I have a PTO chipper that's pretty particular for 540rpm.

BX 540 PTO RPM is 3000-3100 engine RPM.

I was wondering the same thing on my BX1850 that I just got.

I mowed this weekend and ran at full throttle but wonder if I need to. In low full throttle floored seemed to be a good mowing speed for me.

Mowed a little at 2800 and seemed to work fine as well.

You can get by at 2800 if your blades are sharp.

I usually mow at just over 3000 on my BX2200 but use high range.

I've been running at 2900 rpm on my 2350 but that has more to do with only having 4 hours on the meter.

I'm able to cut at full speed in low range pretty well.

I did notice that when the blades come from the factory they don't seem to be overly sharp. I haven't taken the time yet to sharpen them. Has anyone else noticed this?

When mowing with a BX, all WOT all the time. Cuts way better.

I noticed that... higher rpm and it seems to mulch up what's in there much better.. less of the cut grass laying around afterward.

I'm trying to run around 3000 during the first 50 hours.

I was thinking of using the BX for some PTO chipping this weekend.. but I think I'll pull out the Grand L. Not sure I want to run at high RPM for 4 hours straight under load while still breaking in.

These BX engines are designed to run @ 3k to 3.2K rpm all day long and they do it very frugally too.
When I mow w/my BX23 I run it at just a touch below full throttle. Since I don't have a tach I couldn't tell you the rpm but I'm gonna guess it's around 3k rpm. When I want fast BH & FEL response I'll run it about 3 touches below WOT as I've found this to be a good compromise between speed, power and sound. For normal FEL operation I probably run around 1/2 throttle.
Not sure I want to run at high RPM for 4 hours straight under load while still breaking in.
I agree, I wouldn't advise this either during break-in. Some folks believe in breaking them in just like you're gonna work it but not I. I defer to the engineers what designed it and for my 1st 50 hrs there wasn't any WOT or anywhere near it on my machine.
But, with all that said, after it hits that magical 50 hr plateau, run it WOT all day long if you need to and all it'll do is ask you for more :D
Probably be more frugal than the Grand L at that :D

A BX and a Grand L, sounds like a good combo to me.

My manual specifically states to NOT run the engine at full throttle for the first 50 hours, so I didn't.

I typically mow at around 2600 RPM.

No freakin' clue. Idle is about 1:15 and WOT is about 3:42.

I do most of my work about 3:00. Sometimes if I'm in a hurry to get the mail or need that extra little bit out of the BH, I'll shift her to 3:42.

3:42 is where the real business happens. But I mow at 3:00. Much quieter and I can't say I notice a difference in mow quality. And 3:00 certainly provides enough mowing ground speed.

So my answer to your question is 3:00.
