Kubota L3130HST 4WD, BX2350
I'm about to pull the trigger on a new BX 2350. I'm primarily looking for a mowing tractor.. something with a 3ph. I'll probably get the loader because you can always use a loader, but I also have a 3130 with loader and BH so it'll probably get limited "heavy duty" use. Still, I'm wondering about rear ballast for the loader. I keep seeing this implement in the Kubota website photos, but can't seem to find the item anywhere listed among the companies accessory items.

I'm not even sure what it is.. but Kubota apparently is using it as loader ballast in it's brochures and on the website. What the heck is this thing? (see attached photo) Looks like some type of spreader. Not a box blade.. If this is something I should recognize.. Excuse my ignorance.

also.. do they load tires on a BX?? Wouldn't take much.. and probably wouldn't help a whole lot as far as ballast.

I have a new bx 1850 with loaded tires... The loader works great and lifts what I need it to, mulch, gravel , stone, sand wood etc. I think you will be fine with just loading your tires

What is pictured is the ballast box that Kubota sells for there tractors. I have one filled with lead weights. Kubota has a recommended weight posted on the box for the BX and B series tractors. They are great for carrying things also. I have my rear tires filled with Rim Guard, and I can say that it does make a big difference on a small tractor. The best part of loaded tires is that it keeps the center of gravity lower than a weight box. Don't know if Kubota recommends both be used, however, I have used both since owning my tractor with no ill effects.

I have loaded tires on my BX22, and have found that without the additional weight in the rear besides the loaded tires, that my tractor has that "unstable" feeling. I never travel with the loader in the air, but even when dumping I just don't feel comfortable without the additional weight. It might be actual or perceived, don't know which, but extra weight in the rear is a safety factor that I enjoy.

What you show in the picture is just a ballast box. The Kubota ones are kind of fancy shaped but they all hold weight. It is a good thing to build for a project if you are so inclined.

Would a box blade and loaded tires be enough? I was contemplating a box blade anyway.. I have a 65" for the bigger tractor.. that would no doubt be too much for the BX. I figure a 48" would be about right for it.

The thing is.. I started out looking for a mowing tractor that can do other things. But adding a loader means adding weight for ballast.. and probably R4s.. and there I go again.. tearing up the lawn.

I could go back to my original plan and not get the loader.. get it with turfs and no tire loading.. but then it's pretty much just an expensive mower.

anyone know how much weight loading the rears adds to the BX?

The manual for my BX2200 says between 99 and 123 Lbs for 75% fill with calcium chloride, depending on the concentration you choose. This is for a 26x12x12 tire. I like less weight for mowing so I went with the weight box shown in your picture. It will hold 500 Lbs but for the BX they say use 300 Lbs. A box blade would be more than sufficient to do the job, too.
