I would think it would not be a lift pump problem but a high pressure injector pump problem (fuel atomization). Many times more voltage is sent to the fuel cut off solenoid during starting....it would be worth looking into.

If it is easy to get the Glow Plugs out, I would bench test them. Put a 12 Volt wire on them and see if they do get hot.

Do you have to get them out? Can you pull wire and measure the resistance (R)(ohms) of plug with an ohmmeter? Then you know that their current (I)(amps) when connected to battery is I (amps)= 12.6 volts / R (ohms).
Knowing the battery voltage V (~12.6Volts) and calculating the current (I) as above, then the power (P) (Watts) they're outputting can be calculated as P = V x I. (Also P= V^2/R)

....or just take them out and see if they get hot.

you can do a resistance test on all glow plugs and compare. If one is much different then take it out and bench test to see if gets hot enough.

It seems like even if the glow plugs are bad, it should start fairly easy when its warm out. He is saying its still starting hard even when warm out.

Check your fuel stop solenoid. It might be sticking.
I just replaced mine because it was randomly hard to start. Found it was sticking and not allowing the fuel to flow.

Not my video but someone who had the same issue as me. Start watching at 1:00min mark.

Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the key on...? Pressure & flow tested..??? Pinched fuel hose somewhere...???
How about the fuel cut off solenoid (attached to the injection pump), is it sticking closed briefly, or stuck partially closed...???
I dunno, i`m not there to see whats actually going on, just throwing some ideas out there.

Yeah I clearly need to do some troubleshooting this weekend. I'm second guessing the fuel pump because, why would the tractor idle and run normally right after it starts, weird.

Hmmm I seem to remember the glow plugs reading 5 volts DC, I'll retest to confirm.

What does the manual say about the length of time the glow plugs can be energized? I think the manual for my RTV said a max of 20sec. and the Deere starts easier when I go through the auto glow plug sequence twice. I used the G-plugs every time on the TC33D (and all diesels) and I have yet had a G-plug issue.

DTBB>> post # 26..
If the supply/lift pump was allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank{bad valves or diaphragm} & not holding pressure in the line AT the inj. pump inlet..
You'll be cranking & cranking until the fuel REACHES the pump inlet & THEN it'll start & run normally.. BUT, if u shut if off & wait until the next day>> crank, crank, crank until the fuel reaches the pump inlet again.. get it?

I've NEVER rely on a Vmeter for glow plugs.. I've gotten burned to many times.. {pun intended} Readings would be "normal" & come to find out the plugs were bad.. I ALWAYS take then out, hook them to a battery charger or make up lines w/ alligator clips & test them.. COUNT until they get hot..

I find it hard to believe that the glow plugs are the issue (unless its an electrical issue).
I would lean more towards it being a fuel delivery issue on cold starts.
Did you replace your fuel filters @ your 50hr first service...?

I would surly check the fuel cut off solenoid!
Could be sticking partially closed until warming up.
