all this discussion about fancy oil filter pliers, cups, and sockets to remove something that's going to be thrown away. I opened my tool box and saw my channel lock pliers...works like a charm...nothing else to buy and can be used for multiple things :thumbsup:

Sometimes there is not enough clearance for Channel-locks.

On the L48 the transmission filter (not the two hydraulic filters), it is direct machined metal-to-metal contact and stays on like it was part of the transmission.

The solution was one of those chain-strap style pipe wrenches and a come-along attached to the rear axle. What a nightmare but it finally came off.

The metal contact plate of the new filter was coated with standard grease in hopes of an easier removal next time.

Thanks for all the info - I will look into the Snap-on adjustable and the KD Tools pliers. I have used a pair of large channel locks - getting the filters off is not a problem, getting enough on the small oil filter to tighten it is.

Why they don't dip all filters to put a little rubber grip on the end is beyond me

For tightening or loosening? In my experience most properly installed filters can't be hand loosened anyway after they've been on awhile.
To install it I've never seen the need...
I have no problems getting an old filter off unless it is in a hole necessitating the cap type wrench. If accessible I can always get it off with big channel-locks, I don't care if I crush it when it is coming off.

Now if you want a task look at the newer Toyotas with the cartridge filter- the reusable housing is plastic with molded in facets...dang hard to get a grip on it even with the correct cap type wrench. After only a few oil changes I can see the plastic beginning to round off...and a replacement is expensive.

As I posted in this same thread a year and a half ago (03/17/10) One product that might help users of oil filters that I've used since automotive type filters from Champion for light aircraft became available in 1973 as the new filters seized at the gasket and had to be cut off because of the engine heat. Instead of using engine oil on the mounting gasket use a Dielectric Grease. You'll never have a stuck gasket again. I personally use Dow DC-4 Dielectric Compound for aircraft as it is an FAA approved release agent for aircraft oil filters but have used Automotive Dielectric Grease available in tubes from most automotive parts stores with the same results. I use it on everything from my cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, tractors, etc and have never had a stuck oil filter again since using it. One tube will last you for years as you only put a light film around the mounting gasket.

On my F250 PSD I can grab an oil filter that has been installed for approx 6k miles with my bare hands and remove it as long as I used Dow DC-4 Dielectric Compound for aircraft which is basically the same as Automotive Dielectric Grease. Try it and I doubt you'll stop using it!!
