BX 54\" vs 60\" MMM

Does anyone have an opinion (what a question) on whether there is much difference between the two as far as being able to get in close to mow around obstructions? The issue isn't will it fit between things (like the house and a tree), but is it any easier to mow around a tree with one or the other? In my case, there isn't much of a difference in price, and it seems the extra width should help in open areas. But I'm concerned about trimming around things. Unfortunately, getting the dealer to let me give it a try isn't an option (he has no 54" decks and rarely ever sells them). Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin; I have the 60" deck. I tested a tractor with the 54', and I think the 60 enables you to get closer to obstacles and make a tighter turn. Also, remember the 60 is quite a bit heavier and features the side-to-side anti-scalp adjustment on the back of the deck (I can't remember what Kubota actually calls it. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif) I think the 60" is the way to go unles you have access problems to parts of your property.

I have the 54" because of restrictions that I have on my property, but without that problem I would suggest the 60".

I have the 60" and have to cut around alot of trees and flower beds. I can get closer with it than the 54" The 54" will cut just the width of the tires, which wouldnt work for me as I cut under a long stretch of bobwire. The 60" allows me to cut under it without getting my tires in it. My .02

Go with the 60". I had a 1860 Kubota with a 54" deck. When I moved up to my BX I got the 60". It only took me a couple of hours to get used to it. Now theres no way I would want to go back to the 54". I think that I can trim just as close with 60" as I did with the 54".

Re: BX 54\" vs 60\" MMM

Do not get the 54, the 60 is a better deck and will trim much closer. It is a fact, it has a smaller uncut radius and the edge sticks out further to trim around trees and beds. The only reason the get a 54 is it is narrow and may fit between gates better etc. It is also lighter to move around. (I am going for the 250,000 prize!) J

I think the Kubota feature that Will_C is referring to is "Self-Balancing". The 60" deck has Self-Balancing and the 54 inch does not. I bought the 60 inch deck for all of the reasons mentioned by Will_C. I bought my BX2200 in December so I haven't used my mmm yet. I am beginning to think that I may never get a chance to use it!/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It was 3 degrees here yesterday... No signs of Spring, not even any robins?

Can't wait to do some serious work with the Bota; lots of projects planned... come on Spring!

Re: BX 54\" vs 60\" MMM

I've got a 60" on my 2200 and love it. made one slight mod, put a rope on the deflector so I can trim with both sides of the deck. I have gone and cut my old hay fields and not had any problems. good heavy deck. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: BX 54\" vs 60\" MMM

I have the 60 as well. It's awesome. It is very easy to mow around obstacles with and cuts VERY well.

Re: BX 54\" vs 60\" MMM

Thanks everyone. I was leaning towards 60", just wasn't sure if there was any downside. Sounds like as long as it will physically fit between everything you need it to, there's no reason to go with the 54" over the 60".
