I also have 60" deck. The comments above are probably a good indication of why your dealer rarely sells a 54" deck.

Just to add one lone voice from a different POV. I bought the 54" MMM. My decision was based on my particular mowing needs and budget. It has the same float feature as the 60", but lacks the self balancing mech because the smaller size does not require it. Otherwise, it's the same great mower at the 60"

I have the 60" MMM and I have to tell you, that I have to do almost NO trimming after I'm done other than just a few spots that I can't fit the deck into! (I do cut around a lot of trees, too)

I have a 54" on my BX2200. The narrower width fits between trees in my yard and also takes up less room in my already full garage. Also I only mow about 1.5 acres with my MMM. If I had a lot more to do I may have opted for the 60" but in my situation the 54" actually works better.....

I have the 60" mower, I like the way it sticks further out to the sides. I can trim right over the edge of the border between grass & the bark mulch. Saves a lot of time, I don't have to go all arounnd with the string trimmer. I can cut at pretty much full speed because all 4 wheels are on the grass I don't have to worry about running over the mulch just to get a close cut.

I have a 54" mower with Mulch kit installed. I do not have much grass at all to mow, however I wish I had gone for the 60". The cut of the 54" is just as good as the 60", but I cannot get as close in to flower beds and trees as I could with a 60". There are a couple areas of the yard that I have to do with a Weed Eater (Shame to use "manual labor" when the tractor is nearby).
