BX 905 engine

Does anyone know reason why Kubota is putting a different engine in the BX 2300? The BX 23 TLB still uses the tried and true 905, the same engine that is in my B 1700 and many other applications. I'm thinking of downsizing but a brand new engine makes me think twice.

Someone in another thread mentioned that they spoke with Kubota and were told that the BX23 will in [about six months] also be using the new D902 engine...(I hope I remember the new engine number right! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif )

I also tend to lean towards the proven over the new...and so I am happy that the BX2200 I bought last summer has the 905 in it...

Would be nice to hear the improvements the new engine has over the old. Hope it is not simply cheaper to make! Perhaps some design improvement that reduces polution related emissions? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I understand the new 902 engine changes relate to anti-pollution requirements and also that the engine is a little more compact as it is used in the RTV900 utility vehicle as well.

I am thinking about a new 2230 and actually might consider a BX 23. I actually submitted a question to the Kubota technical hot line and the product manager for the BX series called me. According to him they are equal engines. The 902 max RPM is 3200 the 905 is 3600. Also the HP and Torque ratings look to favor the 905. The Kubota product manager assures me they are the same in performance. He did tell me that they will be moving the BX23 to the 902 in the summer sometime. You can't use the same engine block heater in the 902 as the 905. He said clearance issues. The 902 is supposed to be smoother at an idle and a cleaner burning engine according the Kubota product manager.

I have put the Kubota engine web site link below. He also said I can't really use this site because the tractor group gets slightly different engines than what are normally sold as just Engines. You have to go to the home page of this site to find the 902 engine.

I got a chance to look at a BX2230 this weekend and it has the 902. When I popped the hood (with the new, easier opening latch /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) I was quite suprised by the size of the engine. You are correct that the 902 is much more compact. I counted the injection lines to make sure it was still a three cylinder.

Attached is a photo of the 15 HP Kubota Granbia-Boy series model GB155 that is marketed in Japan. This photo was taken last November. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This series has 5 models in the range of 10.5 to 17 HP.

Guess what engine the GB155 uses?

You got it! The D905, rated at 15 HP @ 2,500 RPM!

The d 905 has been around for quite a while and is used in many applications, not just tractors. It seems like its considered a bullet proof unit.Reputation is everything.

Doesn't your B1700 have the D905 as well? What year is it?As I understand, Kubota just jacked up the RPM's to 3200 to get the extra 5 hp for the BX22's rating. True?

Sure looks like it since the tractor I attached the photo of above uses the 905, and they have rated it 15 HP @ 2,500 RPM.

Have to wonder what forcing the engine to run at 3,200 rpm, for 540 pto rpm, will do to its longevity. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
