Would windshield solvent be more dangerous in tractor tires than in a plastic container right next to an auto engine?

Nah, You're not the only one...me too. I have a serious case of welder envy. I keep looking for a decent one at a price I can afford...(read: less than $100) and uses 110. *sigh* Reckon I'll be waiting a while...

I'm in the same boat as you. Decided to do something about it. Slated to take a welding course through a continuing education program this fall. $300 for 36 hours of instruction. Seems like a pretty fair deal. Don't expect I'll be much of a welder at the end of it....but at least I'll be able to take a shot at it!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Charliebrn, you might have to go a little more than $100 (I'm sure prices have gone up), but the handiest little stick welder, and the one I use the most, is a "Comparc80" by "Miller de Mexico" that I bought new from a local welding supply store for $97.43, including sales tax, on 8/29/95.

Thanks for the tip, Bird! I'll see if I can find something of the sort. One of the first jobs I have for it is welding some support plates on the bottom of the bucket so that I don't cut grooves in my brand new asphalt drive. Seems Kubota welds the sides of the bucket with something like 3/8" overlap...and nothing to protect the drive. I figger I'll weld a plate straight across the bottom with maybe a couple plates from front to rear from the cutting edge to strengthen it up a bit. Then if I don't completely screw up my bucket, maybe I'll try welding up a couple hooks on the top of it!!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif Yeehaaa!!!

I've been thinking of making a homemade weights, both front and back, but I was thinking PVC pipe loaded with concrete.
I'd make the rear 48-50" wide to distribute weight across the whole rear of the tractor.
The front it would act as a bumper (then again I have a FEL as a bumper). I'm not sure if you could get enough weight for the front.
Attach the front PVC with end caps and bolt to the frame as you would real weights. Drill/cut a hole in the top of the PVC and just add concrete.

Works like a charm, the loader doesn't cut in and I put a slight curve in the skids to help a novice bucket operator get the "roll of the float" correct.
In the summer I take 'em off to bring back the "cut of the dig".

Do you have any pics of those skids? It's an interesting alternative....though i think I'll still weld that plate on the bottom, if nothing else but to strengthen the back bottom where I've already chewed it up some by using the float on last year's gravel driveway....

I listed the part numbers and prices for the New Holland counterweight. You can find it by going back through these posts to 8/3 since that was the last date anyone responded. One of these days either you or I should get our hands on a digital camera and post a photo of this unit. I've been very pleased with it, and I can't imagine a more compact counterweight solution.
