BX SNOWPLOWING SAFETY

My Gravely apparently does not have a clutch for the PTO. It seems to be gear-engaged. You have to slow down the engine speed to get it to go in. Otherwise, it's like shifting without a clutch and trying to get the standard trans into gear.

Ron,

Thanks for the info. I guess I just figured the BX's were just "mini-B's", but I guess this is another difference between the two series.

I can see why operating the PHD with that type of set-up is a bit of a pain. In fact, I would almost tend to feel that as a real safety concern as it would be difficult to quickly disengage the PTO should a "problem" arise. I wonder if anyone else on this forum has found a solution to make the PHD operation a bit easier on the BX's?

Take care,

Hi Rick,

That's one reason I'm not sure I want to dig many post holes. Getting cranked 270 degrees back around to the lever quickly doesn't seem too good.

The other thing I'm having trouble with is the PHD is SO CLOSE to the tractor, I have trouble lining things up. I'm used to a bigger tractor where the PHD is farther back, so you get a better perspective.

On my PHD also, the assist arm is about in the middle of my back! I plan to remove it, make a couple of 45 degree bends in it, and reinstall it out to the right some where I can reach it without being a Contortionist

Ralph,
My old 812 Gravely has a clutch for the PTO. The PTO lever operates the clutch and engages the PTO without any grinding.
Is your Gravely an old real Gravely or an Airens Gravely ? I am not familiar with the 5xxx series.

Mine's about a 1987 vintage Gravely. Don't know whether Ariens had them by then.

got to agree with u on this one , my b2400 has hydo and a clutch, putting in the clutch stops the pto, also the range lever is on the left and the 3pt lever is on the right.

An alternative to the PHD being to close to the rear of the tractor would be to use the FEL QT and a post hole digger off of a BobCat mounted on your FEL and powered by your hydraulics instead. That way you would have good control & better visibility.
