BX1500 - Dang it! Now I\'m in Big Trouble! Broke.

I made two stupid mistakes in a row and couple with the idiotic location of the transmission oil filter I'm in trouble. Mistake 1 - Neglected to take off the half shaft that connects to the transmission when I removed the deck about 3 weeks ago. That was dumb, my fault, I'll kick myself many times because of it. I never make that kind of mistake but my brain must have been in neutral at the time. Mistake 2 - Put tiller on, accidentally hit transmission selector to spin mid pto instead of rear pto causing half shaft to spin around a few times and knock my oil filter crooked and caused a gallon or more of hydro fluid to spill out. The stupid design flaw that I did not realize until after I had the oil filter off was the quality of metal used on the transmission isn't nearly the high quality that is on the oil filter threads! The other design flaw is why is the dang oil filter underneath and next to the pto? Anyway - now my oil filter threads are stripped nearly completely off. I'm going to clean it up and see if I can grab a few threads with the new oil filter that I just happened to have in my shop. Dang - threads are machined onto the cast transmission housing.

What shall I do? I'm far more likely to JB Weld the oil filter on and leave it for 1000 hours than I am to remove that transmission.

I see, you've already done this before!

I cleaned the threads up and though they are stripped off 2/3 of the way I'm still able to get an oil filter on many threads so it works, for now. Even with 1/2 gallon of oil in the dirt the tractor still works fine. I'll get some more Super UDT Synthetic this week.

Hi Dave,

The JP weld may/should hold.

You may want to look into the BX skid plate, it would have hold the end of the shaft, even if you had forgotten to take it out.

This is why no matter waht I do i never remove the MMM, I use it as skid plate, it is very strong.
