Dave,

I wouldn't stop posting. We are all here to learn. If it was me I would have done the same thing. I would have pulled the guy out just like you did. We just want to be careful that is all.

Dave,

I kind of thought some of the replys were a little strong sounding considering you were pulling with a bx and the chain was probably a lot stronger than the bx could ever be. [just a guess about the chain...]

Safety should always be on our minds and that is what is nearly always behind replies like are in this thread. It is so hard to hear the sound of the poster:s voice when it is in writing.

Please don:t be put off by those who are stressing safety. I also would have done the same thing you did...if the truck was stuck in my driveway, and it seemed reasonable that I might be able to give it that little extra help to get him our...As long as I had a chain that was strong enough, and bucket hooks that were welded on real good...

Pulling from the draw bar would certainly be the best way to go...like has be stated above.

I say thanks for taking the time to start this thread... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the note. The posts suggesting alternatives or better ways to have approached this were and are appreciated!

most of these guys were just trying to stress safety, even thought alot of them may have gotten away with it... remember, most of the "professionals" they refer to, got that way, by jumping into a tow truck and heading out. if you use your head, and don't over do things, you'll be fine.

Dave I think you did a nice thing for the driver that was stuck. Don't be discouraged by the other posts as they are only concerned for the safety of you and the other driver. Just be real careful out there.

I live on two miles of simiprivate rocky and very hilly road. I've got 14 neighbors and we all pull each other out of the ditch numerous times throughout the winter. It's a way of life here. And then there is the occasional tourist who comes down our road in the winter with a two wheel rearwheel drive car or truck and simply wouldn't get out until the next thaw unless one of us pulled them out. Heck, last winter I even pulled a State Police Car out of the ditch at midnight during an ice storm. He was quite appreciative.

Three or four years ago, the local water company contracted with a private operator to dig water lines for homes around our lake. His excavator slid down a bank into the lake. He couldn't get enough traction to pull himself up the bank so I came to the rescue with with my F150 and a 9,000lb winch. Chained off to a tree and with a double line pull of 18,000 we barely got him out. It wasn't until 11pm when we finally got him out or I would have pictures if for no other reason than to tease my Chevy lovin buddies. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Helping people out is just the neighborly thing to do. I guess the Good Samariton Law didn't apply to that guy charged with manslaughter, but I can tell you whoever is prosecuting him wouldn't want me sitting on that jury! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I didn't catch how big the truck was, but I take it it wasn't an S10 pickup. Do you think you could have gotten it out if he wasn't helping with his engine? Probably would have had enough power, but maybe not enough traction.

dmartin88,

I did not mean to turn you off. Please keep posting.
I just wanted to point out a potential problem so that you will still be with us in the future to keep posting.

Sorry If I hijacked a positive post.

It was a standard UPS delivery truck, doubt I could have moved it without the truck helping but guess you never know.
