Hello All;

Long time reading, first time posting. Thanks to everyone for all the good info I've found here in the past.

Looking for some advice.

Had a leak at the rear PTO seal. Never used the PTO (2nd owner). Could see where the seal looked like it wasn't sealing against the shaft in one spot. Put a new seal in and it looked the same. The shaft looked off center.

Pulled the rear cover and found the reason. Inside PTO shaft bearing disintegrated, and half of the counterbore it sits in in the case is gone.

So, rather than replace the transaxle housing (if I could get one), here's the plan.

Put a freeze plug in where the seal was, leaving the PTO shaft out. Try to find as many of the missing fragments as I can, by sticking a magnet up through the drain plug, and possibly where the hydraulic pickup line attaches to the sump (they've probably been sitting in there for years with no problem, and I got most of the aluminum case pieces. Most of the bearing race and one of the balls still at large) Fresh fluid and filter, and that's it.

Maybe over the winter, build up the missing housing area with weld, and devise a way to bore a new bearing seat.

Hi. Welcome. Bummer about the PTO.
My question is, what will be the result of leaving that gear out? Are other gears dependent on it to stay in place?
If not you may be able to operate without the PTO shaft.

If not you may be able to operate without the PTO shaft.

The PTO output shaft just runs between two bearings, one in the transaxle housing (that failed) and the other in the rear cover behind the seal.

The PTO drive shaft also runs between two bearing, one in the rear cover and another forward inside the transaxle housing, so one drives the other but they are held in place by their own bearings.
