Tractor
Kubota BX23
I live in hilly and rocky New Hampshire. I have a part grass/landscaped (2 acres) and part wooded lot. In the summer we have someone cut and collect the grass (unreliable). In the fall we use a backpack blower to gather LOTS of leaves which we then must tarp and truck off which we would prefer to compost in a remote section of our lot. In the winter we have about 5,000 square feet of driveway that I use a 300 pound walk behind snowblower to remove LOTS of snow. I also use a FEL to move that snow back. I would estimate the the bulk of our tractor time is split between mowing and snow removal.

Currently I run a Yanmar 186D 4x4 tractor loader backhoe which is a similar set up to the BX22 but the 186D tractor is a compact tractor more like a Kubota B7400 than a sub-compact BX. I have become attached to the usefullness of the backhoe for plucking rocks, transplanting sapling, and do woods work. The loader helps us move material, and aids in the snow removal, etc. The Yanmar is excellent but in order to run a belly mower and grass catcher I would have to remove the loader/backhoe subframe which would hinder its usability to me. The backhoe and loader are quick-detach like the BX, its just that the subframe they use is not and it isn't compatible with the mower deck. Up to now I have done all of the tractor work as the Yanmar is not wife-friendly (at least not my wife!). My wife cannot help with the snow removal in the winter, moving material, and neither of us can mow the lawn.

We are revisiting our options. One is to add a lawn tractor to the mix to supplement the exisiting tractor. The second option is to completely replace the current tractor and get a new one that does everything. There are space and cost issues to both.

The Yanmar lives in its own garage. To get a lawn tractor for grass and snow work would require a whole different tractor that is narrow to slip in between the cars in the garage. It can be done but only with one tractor we have found. The pricetag of that tractor is substantial but it would allow us to get all of our jobs done when coupled with the loader/backhoe functions of the Yanmar. I would prefer to have one machine that does everything and one that my wife would feel comfortable with as well. I believe the BX is more wife-friendly so that adds to my interest. Aside from the BX22 having a bit less strength on the loader and hoe than my Yanmar I was concerned about the low axle to ground clearances when playing in the woods. I am also concerned about the storage space with all of the attachments which I understand is my problem to figure out. The ideal tractor would have a automatic tranny, power steering, loader, backhoe, narrow belly mower, grass collection, and front snow blower. It would need to be very manuaverable and compact. That sounds like a BX22.

Any thoughts and input would be appreciated.

Mark, per my comment in the other forum, you might consider renting a BX-22 for a day to see how well it will fit into your property. I don't have a problem with ground clearance, even in our woods, but your experience may be differently. The 60" MMM is awesome. A 54" unit is also avalable for the BX if you really have to have a narrower unit, but many of us find the 60" to be preferable, especially for getting close to things...like trees.

But another thought crossed my mind...if the Yanmar is doing the job for you other than mowing, why not use an RFM for your mowing. You can store it outdoors "behind the barn", as it were, and it would not be a problem for the subframe, assuming you have a working 3pt and PTO on the back of the current machine. This is obviously a less expensive option even over a dedicated lawn tractor!

Jim, you bring up a good point. One I toyed with over and over a while back. Our storage problem grows when going with a RFM. Assuming I could actually get a RFM to work around some of the landscaping and ornamental trees.

The reason I negated an RFM was that we need to pick up the grass clippings since around here they just build up and kill the lawn. We also have lots of leaf dropping trees so come Fall there are mountains of oak and maples leaves we need to gather and I found that collection is great! Using an RFM means we would need a tow behind like a Trac-Vac. That means the RFM is laying in the backyard and now the Trac-Vac too.

For a BX22 I am considering the 54" due to the reduced total width when running a grass catcher which will allow for pulling in and out of the garage without have to hook everything up. Yeah, I am a lazy guy, I admit it. My wife wouldn't want to mess around with it anyway. The belly/bagger setup can be stored on the tractor in the gargage without extra space and keeps the yard free of various machines.

Mark, keep in mind that you'll need a place to keep the MMM and associated "pick-me-up" stuff when you are using that tractor with the Hoe and FEL. You don't want to be using the FEL and hoe for much at all with that mower deck on the machine and vice versa. As I indicated in another thread, lowerin the MMM with the hoe on the machine also lowers the top lift arms that remain on the tractor when the hoe is engaged. Mowing with just the FEL on is also not the best idea, especially with the landscaping you describe...that FEL hanging out there makes for manuverability issues.

Due to the space required for attaching and removing the hoe, you'll probably not be able to remove it "in" the garage, either. (I keep mine near my lumber-drying stack on the hill behind our home along with the PHD and Carry-all)

So, the BX doesn't necessarily solve your storage space problem!! (Nor would any other similar tractor)

Ah yes, the clutter of pick me up stuff! I have already been busy measuring the various implements and my spaces. I think I will be OK but the final verdict has not been decided. My current tractor is a similar length to the BX as are the loader and hoe. I know they will fit in the tractor garage fine. I have to confirm my measurement in the garage bay of dropping the hoe and then pulling out of the garage and going back in forward to step out of the loader, and parking the tractor in headfirst. That might be tight and might not depending upon how close I could park the nose of the tractor into the free standing loader while its on its storage legs.

As for the pick me up stuff, off season items will be stored in another area. The biggest question now is with the hoe, loader, and tractor in the tractor garage will the grass catcher fit inside the garage bay while still mounted to the tractor? I have the Kubota provided measurements and I am adding some slop to them. I need to finish my math homework.

Oh, I will definately be mowing without the loader and hoe attached!

You'll also want to consider the lateral space you need to take the MMM off and on...it's much easier on a garage floor than a stone driveway! Trust me...I know. Since I expanded my woodworking shop, I can't remove the mower in the garage anymore. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My tractor shed is a seperate attached garage (slab) with limited width so I will move a car out of the main garage (slab) to pull the BX22 in, drop the MMM, and slide it out to be stored under the old truck.

What are the chances you could line up the detached hoe, loader, and nose the BX into the stored loader then take an overall measurement?

By the way, where you are in PA is a beautiful place! I have a sister in West Lawn and friends in Bartonsville and each time I visit I enjoy the wildlife and beautiful scenery.

Even without measuring, I can tell you I cannot fit the detached hoe, FEL and tractor into my garage bay and still close the door. (And SWMBO would loudly object to the concept, even if it did fit!) The hoe, when removed takes about four feet (or slightly more for manuvering room) of depth and the width of the stablizers spread completely out. The FEL takes a few more feet, even with the nose of the tractor up almost to the mounting points. The folded ROPS (unless you have an 8' tall door, it will need to be folded) sticks out another 2-3 feet behind the tractor. I'll drop the FEL in the garage if I'm going to have it off for an extended period of time, but the hoe stays outside. Currently it's in the corner of the driveway, but will be move back to its perch on the hill shortly.

But to be clear, I also have storage shelves at the back of the bay that preclude getting all the way to the back wall.

Yes, this area of PA is wonderful...you also live in a show-place!

This is interesting. My current tractor is roughly the same dimensions at the BX22. I don't back it all the way into the garage now. I am able to drop the hoe on some blocks to its easier to reattach. Once its dismounted I move the tractor and FEL forward and have plenty of room left in front. I have never detached the FEL from the tractor in the garage though so I don't know if I could and still fit the tractor all the way in the bay without hanging out. Probably not but its a bigger hoe and loader than the BX22.

Jim,

I just measured the exisiting usable footprint in the tractor garage. Its 19 feet long and 7.5' wide. I can put my Yanmar hoe stabilizers all the way down with a few inches to spare. The tractor is not 19 feet long, thats just the space I am giving to tractor stuff.

So, lets add up the BX parts. 4 feet for the hoe, 4 feet for the loader, 8 feet for the tractor. Thats 16 feet and I have 19 feet of space which leaves 3 feet. Sounds good on paper.....
