BX2200 Engine Confusion?

Have you ever dealt with the flywheel on a garden tractor powered by a Briggs or Tech? That flywheel with its magnets and coils underneath is very similar to a dynamo. That's how I remember the differences. Same idea on lots of motorcycles.

My understanding is that a dynamo and an alternator are essentially the same in terms of how they produce energy. However, an alternator has built-in rectifiers, and if < 5 or 10 years old probably also has a regulator.

A dynamo has the rectifiers external to the dynamo (probably integrated with a regulator in a separate box).

So, a dynamo will be smaller than an alternator, and will have multiple wires coming out that lead to the rectifier/regulator box.

Hey, somebody help me out here, I'm getting uneasy. I read a post a while ago that said something about the BX getting its 22HP by tricking it out with high RPM instead of true displacement like a B. Whats up with that? Is the BX truely less powerfull that it suggests?
Also Is there a way to add a Tach?

In reguards to the Dynamo question, if my memory serves me, a dynamo produces DC power by passing a perminent or electro magnet by a stationary iron core coil. It differs from a generator as they use stationary magnets and a rotating iron core coil.
Hope that keeps everyone from loosing sleep.

Ok, there is no alternator,
so were are the wires from this dyno-whats-it-thingama-jig.
My Goal here is to attach a electrically driven Tach.

According to this there is an alternator. I've seen this but thought it was a tensioning device.

I wouldn't call it "tricking it out", it's just a way to get more HP out than would be available otherwise. HP is a product of torque X RPM, so you naturally get more of it at higher RPM, up to a point.

There are some things that are suited better to HP, and others that are better suited to torque. Most "tractor things" require the latter, so HP is "generally" less important. That said, HP comes in handy when mowing.

We may be splitting hairs here too. I just looked up "dynamo" and "generator" in my "The Way Things Work", and it freely interchanges the two terms along with the notion of AC and DC, and does not associate either with a particular way of producing electricity. Of course this volume was written in the UK, and we know how they mess with English. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
