BX2200 For My Dad

Just to let you know, you rock. And it looks like you got a HECK of a deal. I'd love to be able to do this for Pops, but as it is I'm purchasing a trailer (a new 7' x 16' car/equipment trailer for ~$1,800) sufficient to transport my rig/attachments to his house (about 2.5 hours away) and knock out his projects together. He is retiring in March.

Dad's projects include: Widen street culvert to better 5th wheel access, installing several french drains to divert spring water and fix several yard drainage issues, completely restore/replace driveway, install privacy fence on rear patio, install potable water line to 5th wheel, install "grass pave" under where 5th wheel is driven/accessed (ruts badly in rain), remove dead Apple tree, remove various root mats/stumps from trees past.

Figure I can get all that done in 2 or 3 days, right?

Just curious though...a question for the brain trust...why does one need both a MMM and a Bush Hog? Is it a mow quality thing? I figured if your terrain was rough enough to warrant a Bush Hog, you'd just use that to mow the rest of your yard. Obviously I don't know much, though.

Keith,

I am no expert but I believe a bush hog (eg: rotary cutter / rough cut mower) is designed for rough areas were there could be rocks, stumps, etc. and it does not give a manicured cut. The mid mount mower is a finish type mower and would give a manicured lawn cut.

I think most people who have both may have a manicured area around the house and a rougher field type area beyond so they require both. Cutting a rough field with a finish type mower would tear it up. So yes, it is both a mow quality and designated use issue.

My neighbor, who sucked me into this whole Kubota tractor thing, has a couple horses. He has about 1.5 acres in finished yard and about 5 to 6 acres in pasture. He has a brush hog and a MMM. It is odd to see him out mowing the pasture with the MMM in place but using the brush hog. The yard always get the MMM.

Indeed. Never pretended to be a tractor guy, so I don't know. I'm from the "spending less" side of the fence, so I was just curious why one would have both attached to a tractor. The answer is pretty clear...one is for junky lawn, the other is for pretty lawn.

Keith,

I run a heavy duty 40" Gearmore brush hog to cut weeds that are 12' or taller, sapplings, stuff 50 times denser than stuff that would choke a mower. This thing swings massive hammers that that simply pulverize the stuff it hits. There is no "cutting" involved. It leaves an extremely haggard look. Now from a distance, that is o.k. for a field of wild weeds. It could not even come close, however, to leaving a decent even and level cut on lawn turf. The MMM cannot cut such rough material, but is well suited for a nice lawn.

This is why the BX is such a versatile machine. At its size, it can do so many varied and diverse jobs. Now, I need to keep repeating that so'z I can convince the CFO that we need that BH6000 and a thumb for Xmas to go on the BX2200 :D :D :D

Swmpbgy - I live in F'burg.

Keithinspace - The bush hog was part of the package. Not sure if I'll keep it or try to sell. Neither Dad or I really need it.

Going to pick the equipment up tomorrow. I'll try to post pictures next week

Thanks again to everyone's positive responses. I visit this site a lot and enjoy reading everyone's posts. A great group of folks who seem very knowledgeable and helpful.

1*I think you stole it.
2*What 2 do you have on hand?
4*The brush hog just happened to be in the package BUSTMUP got.
5*It is also why 3 BXs are even more versatile.

3* Unfortunately for me and my dad I was 24 years late getting my tractor
I got it in 2004 24 years after he died.
You and your dad are blessed.

I know. It means a lot to me. Just spent 2 days in his crawlspace together with him replacing all the old steel water pipe with new copper.

Cost of materials: $600
Propane bottles consumed: 3...1 to joints, 2 to heat
Icy/Hot for your elbows that are still aching 2 months later: $7.89
Spending 16 hours trapped in a 40 year old crawlspace with your old man laughing about random stuff and jawling about who can sweat a better joint: PRICELESS

Turned the water on and had nary a single leak.

A little off the subject, but all differences aside, Mr. LBrown59 speaks the truth on this one. Little tearing in my eye. Thank you, Lee.

Very sincerely,

Keith
