BX2200 front drive shaft pin sheared

Sorry for the huge delay in getting back to this post but I'm in the process of building a new home. I have not had any sheared pins since the last incident. I have made it through a season of plowing and snow blowing etc and have started hauing tons of soil and boulders again with any drive shaft probelms. I checked the axle wear as instructed and everything appears to be in great condition with no play noted. I have noticed though an odd almost grinding coming from the front end only when in 4 wheel drive and only with a heavy loaded bucket. I really don't know how to describe the feeling and grinding isn't really accurate. It's almost like a binding or snapping feeling like rocks are caught in the gears or something. I checked the axle fluid and it's clean as a whistle so I doubt I have metal in the gears. I can't see how this is related to the shearing driveshaft pin but I thought I'd mention it in hopes someone would have an opinion on the matter.

There was a member about three years ago or I think that was about when it was, that was have this problem with his BX. The best that I can remember it needed grease on the end of the shaft at the transmission end. That may not be right, but I think that was what it was. Anyway he found out what the problem was a fixed it. If you do a search you might be able to find it.

Just had this happen on my BX23. It happened once before on my BX2200.
The yolks do not have a zerk and it is hard to grease the splines without removing the pin/yolk.

I think the problem is not enough grease on the splines, under load it binds and pushes or pulls on the yolk and shears the pin.

Advice: Spray grease the yolk and spines regularily or plan on replacing shear pins.

For some reason my bx keeps shearing the roll pin in the front drive shaft. has anyone else had this problem or heard of such? I can't see how the pin is shearing as the shaft is splined.

I have a 2010 BX25 with 2300 hours on it. The front pin joining the front pinion shaft to the driveshaft snapped for the second time, dropping the driveshaft to the ground. There seems to be no binding and plenty of room for forward and backward movement on the splines. The other end of the driveshaft fits into another spline, with no pin.

I was just hauling buckets full of rocks and had the BX25 locked in 4x4.

It makes no sense, as even under the weight of the load, operating in 4 wheel drive and the splines are not binding, that there SHOULD be any loading on the pin. I also had assumed the original pin just lost its cotter, and maybe the second pin did too as I never found either pin to see if it fractured or the cotter was missing.

I will probably install a 6mm bolt this time, wait to see what happens.

YA472 Have you looked at the front bolster shaft. there is a grease joint that no one greases and it causes wear in area where the pin holds the axle to the frame. this in turn allows the front axle to bang against the pin and breaks it . this pin in only to keep the shaft from falling out a condition which you have experanced.
tighten the bolt then read the book . or the wallet will collapse also.

I have never greased the front axle pivot bolt, so I better check that out tomorrow, thank you. I will also check for movement, though I haven't noticed it when operating the tractor. There is a tremendous amount of free play in the splines, but will check the limits too. thanks.

Yup, just had a peeky-boo at the front axle. There is no grease nipple, and the front axle is solid with no perceptible movement with the front tires elevated off the ground. Everything feels smooth and loose. Again, the amount of vertical axle movement is minor compared to the free play in the spline. There is plenty of free movement on the unpinned spline joint, where it attaches at the steady bearing. I can't see any issue. Tomorrow I will install a 6mm x 50mm bolt with a nylon locking nut, and see if that lasts the next nine months. I will also slip some grease on the splines and keep an eye on it. Only 2300hours, near constant locked in 4x4 mode, and the tractor is amazingly tough. There is no indication the pin is sheared, or just lost the cotter pin. I couldn't find the pin either time.

Past year my neighbor asked for help with front differential drive shaft pinion causing the drive shaft to break when hauling hay for his cattle. 600/800 pound bales. on loader
lifting the front end noticed a plate with 2 bolts about meteric 3/8 american size one bolt had broke and was allowing the front axle bolt to move as much 1 inch forward and back .dependinfg on direction of travel. wear plate was dry of grease. Also the pinion and gears in front differential had to be replaced.along with the bearings on each side.seals included. required over $1ooo bucks in parts.

Just one expensive cost due to not greasing where book explains the need to keep the part greased.
