Just curious ... could you have milled down the outside end of the caps ... .5mm (.020") should be enough meat for that ... then the seal would be in it's normal position. Granted you would have had to pull out all the needles and clean it up real good before reassembly. Actually could be done in a lathe too. Often the end caps have a raised portion around the outside diameter if you are looking at the outside end head-on, .020 should turn off that pretty easy.
Probably not an issue but I'd keep an eye on the seals ... pushing them on a bit farther might try to make them pop out of the little groove they sit in on the cross piece.
