I am updating this question because of what I found today when I removed my deck to power wash it. I took the universal off the deck and this is what I observed. The end of the shaft that hooks to the PTO under the tractor I think the universal may be defective. In one direction the universal moves freely but in the other section of the cross it is hard as heck to move. Yes I did re-greese the cross to no avail, still stiff as hadies. I know the dealer stated he couldn't find anything wrong with the deck but I'm not so sure he even took the deck off my tractor to check everything. I have a feeling he ran it heard the noise and said it was OK. I put my spring pins back in the gauge wheels different then they do at the dealer and they had never been touched. Well here's the question if this universal is stiff and won't lossen up with greese is it possible that the caps are dry and making this high pitched noise? I'm wondering if all I need is a new cross to replace a defective one from the factory? Let me know what you all think. Mark

Yeah, I reckon that could be the problem. I would get that taken care off before something bad happens. J

A bit of an unusual problem, but not unheard of; sounds like you need a new universal joint. I've not personally had such a problem with a tractor, but have known of that happening and causing a driveline vibration in a pickup truck.

Chances are you have found the problem. Is it conceivable that bearings on the spline support could also have been damaged?

Before you get a new one, give this a try. When installing u-joints in cars it is quite common for it to bind after pressing it in because it's slightly cocked. What has worked for me is to take each of the caps on the side that's binding and remove the retainer clips. Then take a socket that's the same size as the cap and place it over the cap. Then give the socket a sharp rap with a hammer on each side. This will usually align the cap and free it up.

Something else I would do after you make sure the caps are aligned, is try to wiggle the cross piece to see if there is any play in the bearings. These probably have needle bearings inside the caps, and if the joint was operated for any length of time with one or more caps cocked in the yoke, you may have excessive wear on the bearings in that cap. If you do find some looseness, you might seriously consider replacing the joint. They are not hard to get out of the yoke if you have a hefty bench vise.

Bigguy:

I would take the shaft off and bring it to the dealer and have him take care of it, rather than mess with it. I assume it is still in warranty.
