Mine takes 3.5 qt. with filter.

Mine takes 2.75 qts. I change the oil and service a friend's machine, that holds 3 quarts to reach the fill mark.

When I replaced my oil and filter I put 2.6 quarts in the engine and measured with dip stick all the way in. this amount only touched the bottom of the stick with no oil in the filter yet. added the rest of the 3rd quart and remeasured still low. filled it to full mark then ran engine for about 5 minutes. shut off and rechecked now with oil in filter reading was lower agian. let stand for about 1/2 hour while doing other things and rechecked and topped off to full mark. in all it took just under 4 quarts. If I just went by the book and did not recheck I think I would be buying a new engine in a few hours. I always double check better to be safe. My neighbor own his own automotive repair business and I asked him if that sounded right and he said 2.6 quarts for a 3 cyl. diesel seems low as diesel engines always take more oil than a gas engine of the same size. I found the same problem with the UDT oil when I replaced it. book says 2.7 gallons tractor took a little over 3 gallons after running and retopping off to the full mark on stick. I check all fluid levels before each use and they are still on full mark not over full. In my opinion don't just go by the book....

Something I learned to do here at tbn is to precharge the filter with oil before putting it on. Set the filter on something and fill it with oil. Wait a minute and the oil will enter the filter media. Fill again, and wait, and again and then the filter will be pretty full and when you start the tractor you will minimize the time it takes for the oil to begin circulating normally.
Now I guess this makes sense...common sense says it does...I started doing likewise on my cars as well.

It makes a lot of sense if the filter installs from the bottom of the engine and you don't spill any installing the filter. If the filter mounts on the side of the engine, then there is no way to put oil into it beforehand.....

I just changed the oil on my B2910 Kubota, and the filter does go on the side...
Granted, there is a slight amount of leakage as you spin the filter on, but it is not too much and is much less than what you put in the filter. I think the oil is held in the filter media...
My guess is that only 5% of the oil that I put in the filter actuall leaked out...my experience is such that I would probably fill a filter and put it on, even if it was mounted upside down. But I would in that case first dump out a little before starting to spin it on.
But like Junkman says...most convenient if the filter screws on from the bottom up... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

never was big on having cold oil running down my arm and hot oil even more so. When I drain oil, I always do it when the engine is hot. I pull the plug and then let it drain. I then briefly crank the engine over and if it starts, I shut it down immediately. This drains the rest of the oil that is in the pump and galleys. When the engine is cold, I remove the filter and install another. Fill engine with the correct amount of oil and then crank it over, but try not to allow it to start. On my old diesel, there was a stop button that I kept depressed when doing this. Never spun a bearing and the old diesel had over 220,000 miles on it when I sold it. That person drove it for another 100,000 miles before the body gave out to rust. If you take care of your engine, it will last for almost forever....... my experiance......
