MikePA: I learned something recently that may apply to what you are doing. If you do not disconnect your house from the utility's power grid, a lineman can be electrocuted. Your generated power will get transformed back to much higher voltage as it moves "backwards" through the transformer that serves your line. I guess this is a serious problem. Just a thought.

I unplug the appliances and furnace from my house power and connect them to the power coming from the generator. No power from the generator gets into my house wiring.
