I think the problem in Heards mistaken recommendation is that they have seen pictures of a BX but they have never actually seen one up close or bothered to learn that it ain't exactly a Sears riding mower sized machine. When I first got on this TBN site the BX was dismissed pretty much universely as a big riding mower by people who had never seen one or used one. They were mistaken as is evidenced by the huge numbers of satisfied BX owners who do a lot more than mow grass. J

LOL! Ain't that the truth! Mowing is only about 20% of how SWMBO and I use the BX around our property. I suspect that the FEL is about 80% of the remainder...

Actually talking to Herd about it they suggested the M96 or the larger unit. HOWEVER they did say that if you wanted to spread the powdered fertilizers (Scotts, etc.) the electric units were recommended. Could be miscommunication /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I would go along with Herd about the Scott's Fertilizers. The spread pattern gets down to about 5 feet and if there is a breeze you don't know where it is going to go. I won't use the Scott's Brand or similiar under any circumstances. My neighbors use that stuff and they have lighter grass and more weeds than I do. I just use plain old fertilizer from a Farm Coop and spread it 4 times per year. The grass pretty much has choked out my weeds.

I am though looking into Organic if I can find some one that sells it in the Minnesota area other than Ace and Home Depot.

Yes, powders are a "no-no" with the M96. I use pelletized lime along with the organic fertilizer and corn gluten meal (for weed control) from Agway on our lawn each year. We just don't do chemicals here unless forced to for a very specific problem. (Poison Ivy, for example, as my wife is extraordinarily sensitive to it)

thanks to all.this fall i am buying a hurd 96. i just bought a sprayer for my trees. i have to pace myself.no interest financing looks great until you figure out you have to pay back the cost of the tractor

Thanks Murph, I guess I missed the part in this thread about Scotts. I don't use that overpriced junk anyway. I go to the co-op and get my fertilizer. I also buy lime etc in the pellatized form. If I need to spray for weeds I will buy a chemical sprayer unit. That powdered high dollar fetilizer is way to expensive for me to use. Maybe if I had a little city lot but not here. He is buying a real tractor so it is time he spreads real fertilizer from the co-op and not the over priced bla-bla stuff from Hope Despot.
Thanks for the correction--no--the Heard M96 will not spread powdered materials. You can mix some fine grain materials like Diazonon in with fertilizer and spread it that way with good success. Oh, a M96 and a chemical unit with a boom in the 50 gallon size on a 3-point with a PTO pump would be an awesome set up on a small tractor such as a BX and small B series. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif J

Yes, I added a little Milky Spore for grub control to the "mixture" when I spread this spring. The coarser material helped keep it going where it was supposed to go, rather than completely blowing away in the wind.

I wished there was an Agway dealer in our area. Do you have the web address of the dealer you buy from? I think you posted in another post your cost and it was much cheaper than what I found around here.

Unfortunatley, Agway doesn't sell over the web and I believe all the retail stores are franchies. Their web address is http://agway.com, however, and there is a retail locator in the left menu. You should be able to source similar materials at and "farm store". "Who" that might be will vary depending on where you are...check your yellow pages for farm supplies.
