I did a search but couldn't find anything on this. I'm having difficulties getting my bx2230 to shift to 4wd. I've tried pushing down a little on the speed control pedal but the front wheel drive lever doesn't seem to want to go to the "on" position. I don't want to give too much force and possibly damage the transmission -- any thoughts on what might help? Anyone else have this problem with a 2230?

TIA

I don't know if this will help... but... I had a hydro B series that didn't always like shifting into 4wd. Sometimes it took a combination of switching from Hi/Lo range and then switching from 2wd/4wd. Once it went into 4wd, the Hi/Lo range shifted easily. I don't really think that is normal... but it was used and it never failed to switch... just took some extra steps every now and then so I never worried about it. Maybe inching forward or reverse a bit would also allow it to fall in easier.

Yeah, I have this "problem," although my guess is that it isn't so much a problem, as it is normal. My 4WD lever is sticky pretty much every time I try to use it. Obviously, don't try to switch if you are moving. Being on flat ground seems to help, and being in neutral seems to help, with breaks on. Like the tranny gears, when it is sticky, I hit forward and reverse a little once or twice, and put a little pressur on the 4WD lever after I let off the gas. So far, it has always gone into 4WD, but its almost never on the first try.

Some times a slight change in air pressure in your tires will make the shift easier. Try the stated pressures, then if it doesn't shift easier put a couple of pounds in the front tires and try again.

It's a gear syncronization situation. Not a problem, I just don't think theres any syncronization gears in the assembly.

Try this, with the engine off and the HST in neutral, try to shift into 4WD. If it doesn't go fairly easily, place your right (or left) foot on the front tire and slowly roll the tractor forward while simultainiously try to shift into 4WD. It only needs to move an inch or so. It should pop right in. If it does then theres nothing wrong and it's SOP.

My BX23 has about 175 hrs on it and it has gotten easier to shift everything, 4WD, Hi/low and the PTO select.

Make sure your wheels are pointed straight. I go 4WD for a very short stretch when I mow. I find it best to be moving at a slow creep. I just pop it right it when I am in that configuration. There is no resistance whatsoever. To get out, I stop, and creep the tractor backwards and pop it out. Again, wheels straight. Creep = 1 fps

I know if the wheels are turned or (occasionaly) if the tractor is stopped, there can be dificulty.

Well, I seem to have the exact reverse problem. I can go into 4wd very easy. Even while moving forward. It just drops in. Getting it back into 2wd drive is the bear. Have not found a sure fire way to get it out of 4wd without struggling some. Never thought it was a real problem though, just an un-synchronized bunch of gears.
