BX2230 weight - Why's it so light?

The land pride 1248 box blade I use on my BX25D weighs 312 lbs. It is plenty of counter weight for this machine. I don't know why someone would spend money on a weight box.

How much are the box blades compared to the weight boxes?

I use 300# in my ballast box on my BX. That is what is recommended for my LA211.

The BX weight is right on with the majority of the sub-compacts in the industry although there are a few that have more recently been introduced that are heavier. The weight is something that is needed if you are going to do a lot of digging otherwise it will just take a little longer then with a heavier machine.

The one thing that I've found that seems to fit most purchases is to find your primary use and buy what fit's that. The use of it for the bulk of hours of use for you needs to be considered. Think about this, if you spend two hours a week mowing and 5 minutes loader work, I'd be looking at the mowing part quite hard. To have the ultimate loader tractor it might mean having to move extra weight the two hours of mowing meaning more fuel being burnt as well as more strain on the tractor components.

Re: BX2230 weight - Why\'s it so light?

I believe it's right at 1300lbs. The rest of the tractors I look at comparably are at 1800-2000 lbs. This is my one and final hang-up on buying this great tractor.

The weight is great from a mowing perspective, but I'm looking to do more. I've got some FEL issues with such a light weight. I won't be doing tons of FEL work but enough I've got to worry about it.

I think you're mistaken. The 22HP B-size tractors run ~1300 pounds. If memory serves, my BX2200 is speced at 1600 pounds w/o implements - I have to assume the BX2230 is the same. With a loader and mower deck, it's pushing 2000. Weight aside, it's pretty much worthless for FEL work - it's the little wheels, I think. I'm not running any extra weight on the 3pt - it would probably be better with another 500 pounds hanging off the back. It's also a little too heavy for mowing - mashes down the grass under the wheels and the deck doesn't have the suction to pull it back up so you get stripes. I recommend a B - I regret buying my "worst of all worlds compromise" BX instead of a B.

My BX2230's weight is 1290 from the book. I think that a 3Pt. ballast box might be the right thing for me.

My local dealer sells the box blade for $599. I don't know what weight boxes cost but if I could pickup a used box blade or tiller for couple hundred more than a weight box I would. They weigh about the same, take up the same space, but obviously have more uses.

Not sure if you noticed, might be worth keeping an eye on what post you reply to, but the start of this thread was 11 years ago

Ah very good point. I'm thinking a box blade is a drag type earth/materials mover. Might be a good thing to get a used one.
