JD X450, Kubota BX23
My BX23 goes up hills ok but when I was using the FEL it would stall without the wheels breaking out.

This seems strange to me.

It has 1300 hours, and was just through Kubota for inspection.
It's a neat little tractor, I got it Sunday at a good price.

Maybe the 3-point lever is in the wrong spot?

You mean it lacks power as in bogs down before the wheels slip?

Thats not unusual in high range.
But, w/the FEL & BHoe mounted it's not that unusual in low range either as your getting about as much traction out of the BX23 as you can with all that weight mounted.

Since it's new to you, use low for digging & other ground engagement type tasks and high for transport & finish mowing.

Also, make doubly sure that the parking brake is off. Unless the brakes are properly adjusted, you can move in either range w/them set but the HST will whine loudly and the performance will be noticeably less. You'll wear those pads out and it ain't cheap to replace them.

Good luck
Dave

Haywire:

It stops moving before the rear wheels break out.
Other times the rear wheels do break out.

I'm expecting that when I am pushing into a pile of gravel that the wheels will spin.
I'm not expecting that it will stop moving forward without the wheels spinning.

I'll try again today to see if I can reproduce it.

You have nothing to worry about. You are just getting very good traction, and using all the power you have available at the RPM you are using, and the range you are in. Unlike a gear drive transmission (where the tractor would stall out in a similar situation) you are just stalling the transmission by exceeding the pressure the bypass valve is set at. As others have stated, keeping it in "turtle", and working at the rated rpm (3000, or near wide open throttle) might change that. The BX series is designed to work at high rpm, and will give much less performance if you drop the rpm much.

BINGO, LOW gear during loader work. The bypass is doing it job by kicking in.

Only other thing to "think" about is checking your bypass valve "relief setting". A drop of even 80-100 PSI can make a big difference in the tractor performance. If it cuts out earlier than designed = loss of working power.
Search this forum for the info.... make up a test rig and buy the little washer like shims off your dealer or online. Buy one of each thickness ( Couple bucks each) and add them until your close to your spec ( My BX22 is 1850 PSI ....I think) It's a pretty simple job, remove the rear tire and back out big bolt on top of the relief valve assy. Keep watch for the spring and shims inside. (No fluid does not come pouring out, maybe a teaspoon at most.) There will be factory shim(s) in there too. 2 hours work tops. AND DON'T be tempted to set the pressure higher than spec......hydros are expensive. I know (it wasn't from setting the pressure higher.)

me too.

The previous owner was a real estate agent and he used it to gravel roads.

Nice guy, fixed everything he knew about.
Fixed things I found.
Fixed things I didn't know about.
