Hi Everyone,
I have a BX23 and my 50 hour service is fast approaching. I was wondering, how inportant is it really to change the hydraulic fluid? My brother told me that he has never changed the hydraulic fluid, only the filter.

at 50 hrs its very important. The tranny breaks in during that period and it would not be uncommon to see a visiable trail of metal flakes in the fluid. Beyond that you can cheat some - but it depends on your machine. Run it for awhile, pull the dip stick and check the coloring of the fluid. Super UDT is all but clear normaly.

The way I looked at it was that, for the warranty period, Kubota "owns" my tractor, so I figured if they want me to change it, I'll change it when they want. Like Messick, said, I may cheat it later ... after the warranty expires. Maybe push it to 4-500 hrs or once a year.
Just wondering about your brother ... does he have a hydrostat drive or gear?
Cheers!

Well before you decide not to do it pull the screen and check and see how much metal you have in/on the screen. Most people find a lot of metal at the 50 hour service.

Thanks guys. I guess I will change it. HomeBrew - his is gear driven. However, for about the last 10 years, he has worked on JLG lifts and that kind of stuff with hydraulics. But I'm thinking the same way you are, that while its under warranty, I should do what Kubota says.

Critical! ! !

Why Risk a 15 to 17 thousand dollar tractor just to save 30 to 50 bucks on fluid?
I wouldn't wanna buy your brothers tractor

The 50 hour service does sneak up on you.It does seem a little foolish to change the oil that quick, but like said ,you will find filings in the screen, behind the left wheel.Once its done you have peace of mind, and its a long time til the next scheduled change.

Going synthetic is also a good idea. I don't know all that about fluids but it seems the family here at TBN believes in it mostly.

Next question - what does everyone do with their used hydraulic fluid? I take my motor oil down the road to a shop that uses it in its furnace, but I'm not sure if its the same...

LBrown,
Sorry - I didn't mean to offend you in any way. And I must have for you to have made a blanket statement about my brother like that. I thought that TBN was a place to ask questions and talk tractors - not family bashing.
