Well I finally got around to driving into the creek. (sorry no pic) In the tall grass as I was turning around I drove straight in about four foot deep with two ft. of water. The back wheels were still on the bank, front wheels half way down, bucket under water in the mud. Now what? Couldn稚 back out as the bank was a straight down drop off, couldn稚 curl the bucket or lift in the mud to push myself out backward. Stuck!

Thanks to the good farmer neighbors with the big iron to give me a pull. I only had to walk ¼ mi.

After I was pulled out and checking under the BX (no mower), I noticed a lot of play in the 4/wheel dive shaft.

Now my question, how much play in the 4/weel drive shaft coming out of the front axel is normal? Four wheel not engaged. On my BX23 it has almost ¾ of a turn. Is this normal? This play is internal to the front axel and not the u-joints.
Thanks

I could be wrong, but I'll have to check mine- there should be no play at all. are you sure there is play in the shaft? We need more info, is there play in/out or sideways ?

I'd be careful when putting machinery into a body of water. Not just that you can break things but the local wildlife authority may come on down on you like a ton of bricks.

Every jurisdiction is different, but in Canada we have a federal law called the Canadian Environment Protection Act. Anyone introducing a deleterious substance into a body of water (engine oil, hydraulic fluid etc) is subject to some serious fines.

Our Fisheries Act also protect bodies of water containing fish which means pretty well most bodies of water. If your stir up the bottom and smother spawning fish eggs you're goint to pay some very serious coin.

I don't mean to dump on you at all, and I'm really sorry something may have broken.

The shaft turns three fourths of a revolution but doesn't have any in or out play

No oil in the water don't worry!

Seriously? The guy drives his tractor into a creek by mistake, gets stuck, has to hike out and get a tow to get it out, and now he migh have some damage to his tractor and you hit him with the Fisheries Act? WOW. I guess it takes all kinds, but it really is disapointing to have to read about a guys ordeal and then to see something like this.

Two types of people out there. Those who help out, and those who bring others down.

As for the play in the driveshaft, I agree that there shouldn't be any. There is a good chance that you damaged the U joint, and there is a good chance that the bearings have been out on it for awhile and you just never noticed it before. Take pictures of the area where you have the play and let us see if we can give you an answer.

Are you being serious?

In these parts...there are a lot (and I mean a lot) of roads (private roads, county roads, forestry service roads etc) that cross streams and rivers that have no bridges...fording the streams/creeks is the only options...

on a similar topic...besides the breathers/vents on the axles (4x4) is there anything else that should be protected when fording deeper streams? I have a gear tx so no hst fan etc...

As if needed, yet another reason I wouldn't live in Canada.

I think we all try to be good stewards of the land and don't need a mighty governmental entity to make us. Sometimes s*** happens that's why they make those bumper stickers.

I agree there shouldn't be that kind of play.
