You absolutely have to be in 4 low! I don't have as much experience as most here, but I do have nothing but steep hills -many 30+ degrees.
With 7 years on an HST lawn tractor and 125 hrs on the BX, I NEVER use the brake on the hills - unless I stall (seat switch as I'm backing up). As long as the HST isn't in neutral, you won't roll. You will get the touch after a while. And rdsaustintx is dead on - light touch on HST pedal makes a huge difference
The BX actually amazes me on the slopes - many times with the LT, when not paying attention or going to fast, I will speed down the slope with the HST in reverse, wheels churning backwards.
