Today after a hard days use pushing snow around the yard I went to put the machine away, well being in low gear from pushing i went to switch into hi. Being on a hill i went to apply the brake to safely change gears when much to my dismay the pedal went to the floor ???????? Long story short i went looking on here for a possible cause. I read this post and I too Hardly Ever use the brake except for when its on a trailer. I have no hills in my yard when i mow. I checked the linkage and Nothing had popped off. The machine had been to the dealer recently to have some loader lines replaced and to adjust the hydro because of a nasty creeping problem; which by the way is better but not gone.
I backed into the garage jacked the rear end up applied the brake and went to spin the rear wheels and zero resistance. I then tryied to adjust the turnbuckle on the right side of the machine. I got some of the free play out of the pedal but again zero resistance when the rear end is in the air and i spin the back tires by hand. Fearing that there was some sort of internal problem I put the turnbuckle back to where it was and let it down, and figured that I would call the dealer on mon When traveling back to the shed with the BX i decided to stop on a small hill and slide the trans into neutral to test the brakes again.
Not expecting anything I let the machine start to go (with my hand on the loader control to stop the thing if i had to I found out that the brakes held????? Is there something I am missing here I am ignorant to this type of braking system but Why do the brakes work when the machine is on the ground but not when the rear end is in the air??

This still does not answer the question about the brake pedal having soo much free play?? Nearest I can figure is that for some reason mabee the dealer adjusted it when trying to fix the creeping problem?? I guess I am not sure if i have a problem now or not I can adjust the turnbuckle back to an acceptable amount of free play but mabee it is just my ignorance of how these brakes operate. If anybody can educate me please chime in

thanks
john

The brake is on the drive line not on the wheels, both wheels need to be on the ground for the brake to work.

both the factory warranty and the warranty thru the financing are in effect. I was abel to adjust that turnbuckle almost to the end of its adjustment and I got a normal pedal back. I fear #1 that if the brake was draging that I must have ate away at alot of its life, and basically thru normal use what I have now for brakes would be something I should be left with years in the future. I never use the brakes, i have no hills and no need to. Its only because I was shifting into neutral on a hill that I found the problem, kind of like your leak. So by coincidence i found the problem :(
My dealer is Not that helpful and is over an hour trip one way, so to borrow a truck/trailer get it there and back is a PITA. I am wondering if they may have touched the brake adjustment when they tryied to fix the creeping problem ???? As far as what is left on that turnbuckle I have about a half inch of threads left to go. I am not sure what to do for sure I am going to call the dealer, but if he jams it to me and says it was neglegence I dont want to be stuck with the bill. The other thing I fear is that all he will do is tighten the turnbuckle on the pedal linkage and call it "normal" which I know os a crock of S*&t; and not inspect the internals for overhearting/damage :(
When adjusted out the brakes DO work and will lock the machine up tight. Its just that there is little if any adjustment to the linkage.

The creeping problem is adjusted by springs in front in underneath floor of hydro waaaay up on right hand side. There a lock nut for hydro pedal you can adjust tension for and its doesnt do a thing for brakes. SO where is this leak ? the other link you posted to was for a front axel, dont see how its related to brakes. (take it easy on me, haven't had full cup of coffee yet ;))

I hear ya about the coffee :( I have no leak corey who had a similar post/problem had a leak which wound up causing him to find out about a brake problem VV similar to mine.
My machine just had a problem with creeping and since the last time to the dealer (1.5 months ago) I just yesterday noticed that the brake pedal had nearly NO bite it would go to the floorboard. I adjusted the linkage all the way (nearly) to the end of what it will let you adjust and now the brake pedal has about an inch or so of travel then it grabs and works well. However I dont think that this is normal to have to adjust the linkage all the way down to the end to get a good pedal. And why all of a suddon would it do this.

I have the WSM and it does not look like an easy job at all!! Has anybody here replaced the brake linings on a bx before??

When they did mine, it was a week long job for them. They had the entire rear end of the tractor torn down when I went in to check out the brakes. They were worn completely down, and the metal had blued from the heat. I think that's what you're going to find is going on with yours. I would get it in before your warrantee is up.

The only think that makes me hesitate by taking it to the dealer is that the pedal since i adjusted the linkage seems to be ok. The pedal has the right amount of free travel, then it grabs and holds. What I dont like is the fact that since the incident (loosing the pedal) I have had to take up all the slack in the linkage adjuster. I will put a call in to the dealer and see what they say. If i make the 2hour round trip to just have him look at the pedal and re-adjust linkage, I may just loose my cool badly. I would have been better off not having any brakes this indecission is killing me :(

I wish I could provide mor insight- but at over 500 hrs I havent had to adjust it yet, I moved it a short distance with brake on couple times. :ashamed: So with you adjusting it all the way tells me it might be time to have it looked at. I just don't see any hurry though. I'd wait till snowfall is over or a forecast of no snow for a week would be ideal time to be looked at.

keep your cool roma.

On my BX2350, I've had to adjust mine twice. I'm pretty sure that at least a couple of times the brake pedal was left on and the machine was used. One time was by my 16 year old son and I think he did a fairly large amount of mowing with it. I've got some adjustment left in mine, but not much. Mine has about 300 hours on it.

Sounds like you may have pushed a lot of snow with the brake on, then, when you went to change gears, you released the brake and found that you had worn down the pads. Adjust the brakes, don't run with them on again, and they will last you a lifetime.

I am leaning towad your solution, with one added twist, I am wondering if there is a way of putting in some kind of warning light to indicate the brakes are on.

A twelve volt sealed paddle/limit switch from Square D that is a normally closed contact and attached to the frame of the tractor with a 12 volt indicator light mounted near the dash or directly above or on the limit switch itself would work wonders.
