The loader on my BX24 has a second position for dumping the bucket, which I thought was just a float-down dump. But, this doesn't seem to be the case. If I have the loader on the ground and I push the stick out to that second detent, it lifts the tractor up. Did I hear wrong when I hear that the second detent was a free-drop dump?

It is not a "float down dump", it's the regenerative position or "fast dump".

You can read lots about it HERE

Pushing the stick all the way forward, past the detent, is the "float" position which will allow the bucket to "float" along a surface. Sometimes takes some getting used to pushing past the detent as it is a bit counter intuitive when the forward push first can lift the front end, but if you keep going you will push past and get into float.

Stick all the way to the right is the fast bucket dump

It is my understanding that the first position in bucket dump is a regen position that allowed for a faster dump and the second position is not regen but had a lot more power. That is how it is described on page 18 in my operator's manual.

Ron, you may very well be correct as I am not that familiar with how Kubota did it, but the info is still valid:D

On the JD's, the fast dump or regen is all the way to the right, whereas the regular dump position is a little to the right.

Yes that is exactly the way it is and it can cause problems when plumbing things to the dump circuit, ie grapples and snowplow angles. Doesn't make much sense to me why they did it this way. I would like the regen function to be in the las part of the stick travel.

It is also VERY handy when your tractor is stuck in the mud and you are out of ideas. You can push the FEL lever to the right past the detent like you describe to pull the tractor forward a few inches at a time. I've had to do this twice and it has worked to get me unstuck.
