Hi, I have read this forum since buying a secondhand BX24 about 2 years ago. First time posting though. There's lot of good information on here - very grateful to all those who post. I wonder if I can call on your help for a problem I have, before I decide whether to call in the mechanic and get hit with the bill.

A while back the engine would occasionally suddenly lose power and almost stall, then recover and everything would carry on fine. I thought maybe it was the seat switch and didn't pay too much attention. But then it started to do it more often. Engine would be ok idling, but every so often just start to choke and if I took off power it would recover. But this this week I started up, and even on idle, every so often the engine just starts to choke and stall, but never quite stalls, then goes back to normal revs, and the cycle repeats every 10 or 15 seconds. That's all while I'm not even in the seat.

The tractor only gets used at weekends, not very much, sometimes sits for a few weeks unused. I wondered if the fuel filter was clogged, so replaced that. Also added some redex diesel treatment, but no joy in either case.

Has anyone else experienced this problem, and any ideas for a fix?

Did you replace BOTH fuel filters on BX ? are you absolutely sure that the HST pedal is in neutral while off the seat? the BX is notorius for sticking HST pedal and if it was off center it could be kicking in the saftey switch.

Not sure why you added redex- I dont think it would have fuel injector plugged up issues yet, the BX24 is too new.

Next time you observe the BX running, make sure the hood is open and watch the shutoff plunger on engine. If the plunger moves and THEN shows "choking" symptoms then you know you have a saftey switch kicking in or shorting out somewhere.

If the shutoff plunger never moved, first check the fuel issues. is both filter replaced? is it plugged up again? is it cold out and fuel treated? is the outlet from tank clear? when replacing the first filter underneath tractor, does fuel come out freely ? if all this is done, then perhaps you might have a pump issue. check voltage to pump and grounding.

Yes! As Radioman suggested, replace the other one...
You might also have condensation built up in your fuel tank.

Thanks very much for the replies. I don't think it's a safety switch issue because it does it when I'm not even in the seat - on an off by itself. But I'll check as you suggest.

I didn't replace the second filter, so that's definitely worth a try. Condensation could be a possibility - I'm assuming I can get additive to deal with that?

I'll try these and report back. Many thanks for the suggestions.

Belated followup - I changed the second fuel filter, and that indeed solved the problem, thanks for the tips.
