It's either a problem or I'm doing something wrong. When I shift the speed to high range, The transmission bogs down like it's under a heavy load, but it barely moves. It runs like crazy downhill, but if you turn it around and start uphill, it will not go at all. The tractor was just delivered last week. Any thoughts before I call the dealer?

I know it sounds counterintuitive but try letting up on the pedal when going up hill.

If you tried starting your car in 3rd gear going up hill it wouldn't go either. But you don't mention how steep the hill is. All of this matters. Does it go uphill in low range ok?

The question is does the high range have a problem or are you trying to do something it can't. Is the BH still on the tractor or the FEL? All add weight to your problem.

As mentioned, incline will have an impact as will load on the tractor. I swtich between high and low often depending on what I'm doing.

I agree that going up hills with all implements attached slows progress, but the "not go at all" part is disconcerting.

Mr. Jabroni, it is up to you to decide if something is "wrong", but consider this: The HST is not unlike any other implement that demands pressure/flow from your hydraulic pump. With all the weight up a steep slope, the engine WILL labor more and the machine WILL NOT move as fast as it would on a flat surface (it isn't gear driven, remember, so the ratio of engine speed and treadle position to ground speed is not fixed).

I routinely go up a 30% slope and with FEL and BH attached, I consider it the steepest reasonably attacked before I shift into low range. It does weigh the engine down and makes a bunch of whining while trying to move up the hill.

All that said, if your tractor really seems to be behaving very, very poorly on slopes, a dealer call wouldn't be out of the question.

A friend of mine was using my tractor (yes, i'm quite a friend) on a hill and he tried climbing in high and went no where. I told him to put it in low and hold the speed pedal still and he'd go up the hill. Presto--it worked. I thought i remember reading somewhere (tractorbynet or manual or HST tip sheet) about keeping the tractor in low gear on hills and only use high speed on flat ground. Also, not driving the tractor like a car helps because of the HST. Keeping the pedal constant going uphill lets the HST kick in. The pedal is for speed, not for power. I know when i climb a hill in my car I give her some gas, but the tractor definitely isn't like that.

The BH is off the tractor. The incline is my driveway. OK, let me put this another way. If I start out in Hi range on the level driveway, it barely moves. When I approach the incline, the tractor stops moving, all the while the transmission sounds like it's under load.

Is the Parking Brakes on?

A) It sounds dumb, but I have MANY TIMES accidentally left my parking brake on and had the same symptoms as Mr. Bird 1968 has pointed out. It's worth asking.

B) That said, it sounds like something's messed up as you should be fine on level ground and it certainly shouldn't be stopping on any slope present in a typical driveway.

Sumthin' don't sound right.

What RPM are you doing this at? I would think you would need about 2500.
