Is it normal to hear whining and various levels of noise when operating an HST depending on the load. It sure sounds like gears wearing on each other.

Fishalaska,
I sure hope it's normal, mine is doing the same thing.

I hear various levels of whine depending on the load its under at the time.

My BX23's HST ranges from barely audiable with just the MMM mounted & mowing on level terrain to a constant whine when traversing a slight incline with the FEL & BH mounted.
A whine is normal and it'll get louder and more constant when the load increases.

You'll also probably start to notice the HST making a loud hissing noise once it warms up. It sounds as if you can hear the hydraulic fluid zipping around pressurized in the lines & HST, which it is and it to is a normal sound.

Loud clunks or squealing or any metal on metal sounds are not normal :D

After awhile you'll get to know all the normal sounds your BX makes, including the sound the HST makes when you try to start off with the brake on :D

Never done THAT before.

Well now that you said that I bet you do it in the next few days.
I can usually tell within a foot or two now that I have gotten used to the way the tractor acts in different situations. I have probably driven it a total of a 1/4 mile with the brake engaged. If anything it holds better now than when it was new.

When mine starts to whine (I think of it more like a vibration sound), I adjust the throttle up or down slightly and the noise diminishes or goes away completely. This seems to work no matter where the throttle was to begin with.

The noises come to an abrupt halt while in reverse and letting of the pedal as does the tractor. You can get serious whip lash from this animal. I do hear the hissing sound as in fluid or an air leak type sound also.

The whining is typical for hydraulic systems under load. Not to worry.

My BX24 did not have the HST noise when she was new and not at least for the first 20 hours. I am now approaching the 50 hr mark and the noise only occurs after 10-15 minutes of running or when the oil gets to its operating temperature. The noise sounds like a "spun" bearing resonating in and out, just in the idle position (no movement and no FEL or BH operation). It appears to come from under the steering colume which is just above the hydraulic pump. The noise level increases at higher RPM's, but masked more by engine noise. It is clearly evident at 1500 RPM and less.

I returned my BX24 to my dealer for a leak on the hydraulic pump and they just tightened a return line fitting on the pump. I also informed my dealer of the squeeling I was experiencing. When I returned to pick up my BX24 they said there was nothing wrong with the HST pump, steering motor, 4-way valve; and could not explain why the noise was evident.

In my profession as a Design Engineer I have had similar experiences. I believe there is a problem in the hydraulic pump that Kubota has not realized as of yet. A blow-by condition on a proportional sensing valve or other load sensing piston will show these typical symtoms in gear and axial piston hydraulic pump circuits. My BX24 also appears to run hotter that I would expect and with "thinning" HST oil at these temperatures, valving does not respond the same and can resonate at certain flow rate conditions. This explains why the noise does not occur at startup, thicker oil!

I am going to perform my own service at the 50 hour mark and visual exaine the oil, filter, and other drainage to see any evidence on metalic particles or foreign debris. I'll also test the viscosity of my oil at room temperature and operating temperature to see if the oil is stable or not. If the problem continues, or shows increasing noise, I'll be writing a letter to Kubota about a very unhappy 1st time owner of Kubota. If I get no resolution with Kubota, I'm sure a trade will be soon, before loosing more value, for a "green" machine (which I about purchased anyway, price varied by only a few hundred dollars).

If anyone can get a dealer to raise this as a common customer complaint with Kubota it may have more impact to the BX24 reputation in its debut this year. I would like to hear any feedback on specific symtoms, assuming my letter to Kubota is forthcoming. I'll keep you posted.

Other than this issue, I'm very happy with the BX24. FEL lift capacity could be a little better, but I can work with this on the roll back power, forward push, and lift combo. A little experience and technique helps, too.

Better drive a Green machine first. Mine squeels just like my Kubota.

Only time to worry about the HST is when it DOESN'T whine.

They definitely sound a little different when the fluid is hot. It also depends on implements. With BH on, can barely hear it. With BB on the sound reflects directly back to the seat.

Good tread and post. I've wondered if the noise my tractor makes was normal and it seems it is - THANKS.

My BX25 has just started to make a different sound when under load. The noise appears to be coming from the rear remotes. It just started today as it was the real first day I have been really working the BH. It will also do it when the FEL Curl hits the stop. It isn't the usual whine it sounds more like a creeky door that needs oil. I first noticed it when swinging the boom from left to right. It will only do it when you are swinging it full speed. When swinging it slowly. It does not do it. I at first thought a rock was caught in the swing pivot point.

Should I call the dealer?

Cheers,
