A question about sizing a rear-mount rotary mower for a new BX24. I'm planning to buy the tractor in the next couple of weeks and am looking at attachments. Way more fun that your average hardware store :D

The tractor will be for a couple of acres of rough pasture on a slight slope with a bunch of blackberries and landscaping opportunities. The pasture will get up to a foot high and is being mowed for fire prevention after the neighbor's horses move off in the summer. There's a couple hundred feet of gravel drive. The lawn is taken care of by a smaller riding mower that can get in and around the trees, etc. Besides the FEL & backhoe I'm looking for a box blade and rear-mount rotary mower.

The dealer spec'd out a couple of Big Bee attachments. The HD4 4' box scraper seems about right based on what I've read here. I was wondering about the AG42 42" rear mower. I should be able to handle a 48" but the sales guy said the 42" would mow better with the wheel width of the BX. I suspect he's selling what he has but would like the group's opinion(s).

Thanks,
Larry

I think you should buy the widest rear mower your tractor can handle.

You can always reduce the overlap if a particular cut is difficult [wet or tall grass]. When conditions are ideal, the added 6" of deck width will be welcomed.

Sincerely,
The Gardener

All things being equal, is a rear mower easier to install/remove than a MMM on the BX 24? I have gotten pretty quick changing my MMM on/off but an wondering about the pros/cons of switching to a rear since all of my other rear attachments/implements go on and off without me getting on the ground.

If you can get a rear mower that will fit an I-Match or similar it will probably be quicker than the MMM. But you will still have to get off to do the pto. If it won't fit an I-Match, until you get use to levering a big rear mower around it can be a PITA to get it on the TPH. Once you get the hang of it, you can get it on and off in a couple of minutes.

Thanks for the info. Forgive my inexperience, but what is an I-match? Is it anything like a quick hitch. I have on of those but don't use it to frequently with my rotary cutter and landscape rake.

Perhaps the trick is to match the rear finish mower closely with the BX. For example, both the Landpride 48", and Woods 54" seem very well matched, and small enough to move around easily. The attached photo is a Woods 54" on a BX2350. Front weights are used for balance when transporting. The owner of this BX likes it very well, and needed the rear discharge to keep grass clippings off from his small Christmas trees.
