I pulled out the eleven plastic "Christmas tree" ribbed shank fasteners that hold down the rubber floor mat and pulled up the mat. After four years, a layer of mud and water was under there but it washed up OK, no rust spots that I can see.
The ribbed shank fasteners are tough to get out, and are pretty much once and done. I might try something like the arrow shank or keyhole shank fasteners that are easier to pull out or maybe black nylon nuts and bolts as you can reach underneath to almost all of the hole locations. McMaster-Carr
