BX2660 - 4WD active, not sure.

How can I tell if 4WD is active?

With the lever forward into 4WD, the rear wheels spun while the rear blade was lowered too far and digging deep into the soil.
It appeared as if the front wheels were not engaged. The BX behaved the same when I moved the lever to the rear to disengage 4WD.

20 hours total on the BX, and the 4WD lever has always been difficult to move, or at least more so than the speed lever.

I think you just answered your own question.

If dropping your rear blade can stop the tractor and spin the back tires, and the fronts don't.......

Push lever forward to 4 wheel engaged. Then if the differential lock on the BX2660 is the same as the BX2350 then at your left heel almost under the seat is the differential lock pedal. Push down on it with your heel and see if it won't climb straight up the side of a cliff. Remember to only do this when you are going straight back or straight forward and not in a turn. If the differential lock pedal is not where I described then look around your left foot area some where for it.

Do you have a floor jack?
Jack the rear wheels up and the front wheels should pull you around in 4WD.
Have to agree with Willl, looks like it is not working.
JOHNTHOMAS ??? I do not think the 'differential lock' has anything to do with selecting 2WD or 4WD.

Your right KENNYV, the differential only makes it closer to actual four wheel drive. Some people don't understand that engaging the 4 wheel drive only makes the front wheel start pulling on some Kubotas. That to get the back wheels to also pull requires also stepping on the differential pedal. I think some models pull from the rear when 4 wheel drive engaged and the differential pedal being pressed engages the front wheels. Not 100% sure about that. If there was some slight confusion on whether the lever was in 4 wheel drive the stepping on the differential lock may help clear it up without the floor jack. Just try it.

In 4WD only one front wheel and one back wheel will spin at a time. So make sure you look at both sides.

That is interesting; I was only looking at the right side where the rear wheel was spinning.
I'll first take it to the hill and try to recreate the situation and look at both sides, then try the floor jack. At first, the suggestion of a floor jack sounded dangerous, but if the jack has wheels it should be ok.

On my BX it doesn't turn as well and it makes some driveline noise when 4x4 is engaged when I am on dirt. If it is working you will have soe binding on dry pavement - don't try too tight of a turn though.

Mystery solved.

One of the two bolts connecting the 4WD lever to the tractor was missing, so the lever was able to move forward and backward but was not doing anything.

I tested the 4WD by raising the rear wheels off the ground with a hydraulic jack, and raised the front wheels with the bucket. It was very easy to then watch all wheels spin (or not spin). And while playing with the lever, noticed a missing bolt.
