Got the shop manual. Sadly, it has VERY little about the electrical system beyond simple schematics. Also, very few test procedures until you get into the engine guts section and there it has a little bit. Kinda of a sorry "shop manual."
Ok, here's what happened. I noticed that the starter was not jumping out (engaging) every time. Bad sign, bad juju. Even though the battery tested fine at a battery shop, turns out it's voltage was fine but just no load carrying capacity (even though the shop's tester showed it was. <sigh>) Took the starter to a car electrical shop and the guy tested it (our of circuit, of course.) He noticed that engagement was intermittent, too. So, I asked him to fix it. He did and it only cost $120. Starting was still very anemic, so broke down and got a new battery. Another $120. However, she starts and runs fine now! It certainly didn't hurt that I had cleaned all the contacts until they were all shiny. Thanks for all the advice, guys. Will take 4 months to financially recover but she works again! Yay.
I missed this when you first posted this but as I read through this I kept asking myself did he ever get a new battery? It seems like most of the time it’s just the battery. Glad it’s fixed and I’m glad you came back to tell us the fix.
