oh man, as parent, that just makes me cringe and shudder. I can't imagine how badly that guy feels. However, I am not a big fan of liability cases unless they involve conspiracy or gross negligence. It sounds like they did the right thing throwing this one out.

I will say again does the RIO switch keep this from happening or does looking behind you? I don't have children but I keep my dog in the house while mowing because he wants to follow me whenever I am outside.

It is bad when children and pets have to suffer because of a parents poor judgement. I noticed the article doesn't say whether a RIO switch was on this tractor.

I agree with the court to not hold the tractor Mfg liable. When I had small kids I assigned my wife the job of keeping them inside while I mowed around the house. I have a few small grand kids now and I never mow when they are visiting. Planning ahead prevents more accidents than the RIO. Most plane crashes have their origins before takeoff.

I have bypassed my RIO because I back up a lot and it is a pain. I also don't think it would have prevented the accident in the article. You just get in the habit of pressing it and not looking back anyway. I disagree that it makes you think. It just becomes another bad habit. But it probably helps in court, and that is why the RIO is there.

I really find mine more of an annoyance than a safety feature.
It is true that you only need to pull up as you depress the reverse pedal, you don't have to hold it. However, if you let go of the pedal and depress it again, the mower cuts out.

Well I often mow in tight quarters and this gets really annoying. I have to keep reaching forward to pull the lever and that takes my hands off the wheel and shifts my right shoulder forward.

Some interlocks are more practical than others...
CC has the best set up on this.
