Buying Advice Cabela's selling Compact Tractors

I told them when I stopped in to order it that I refused to pay $12 shipping on a part the size of my thumb, and that's why I was ordering it from them. They ordered it without meeting their minimum, then tried nailing me with the added expense. Then they said they "worked some magic" and got it down to $40 instead of $61 via another voicemail as I was done talking to them after our conversation when I cancelled the order due to the obscene price increase, and I promptly bought one online for $35 shipped.

Cabelas is adding value by bringing a tractor into the Cabelas brand, providing service, and attachments made by woods. In other words, they are creating value by being able to sell packages where everything is sized right and works without the customer needing to become overly familiar with tracts and their accessories. In other words, Cabelas is doing a classic value add and I wish them well.

First off, I disagree with the entire " value added" concept you're suggesting. Plenty of dealers sell packages with everything sized appropriately, and if a dealer can't manage that, they should lose business to those who can. What you're describing is what I call "doing your job," not adding value.

Second, this has nothing to do with my comment. I just pointed out that Cabela's is doing nothing more than selling an already existing TYM model. The Cabela's tractors weren't made specially for them, or built to their specifications, or under their direction....nothing like that. They simply ordered a TYM in green, and added an appropriate loader.

They also added wheels and tires according to their marketing guy. :)

I do not like paying top dollar and shipping for my bits either.

Is this something out of the norm for a retailer? A classic " value add" ? I don't see the extra value. I see the extra price though on the Cabelas tractor I looked at.

A local retailer's value-add is, among other things, convenience and availability of merchandise on display. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

I wonder about this though Eric, because when I asked them about buying a grapple they had on display, they wouldn't sell it to me from inventory - I had to order another one, and pay shipping.

So you have a unit on hand, and then won't sell it? How is this convenient for me?

Some people may not trust a off brand like TYM but trust a name like Cabela's. IMO.

So really they are banking on their customers being idiots?

Cabelas is not the same as it once was....it is now Walmart, nothing more and has the same goals. I worked there before and after they went public....huge difference.
