Someone removed the diagrams from my book /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif--so I have none at all! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

J_J,

If I remember correctly, and if I understand your question, I think that cable is called the hydroback. Do a search limited to the PT forum/all posts and discussions refer to what you are dealing with. The hydroback cable was replaced with a direct hydraulic valve at the treadle a few years back. I believe that MR had some more info on this.

I beleive the actual spring device that the cable connects to is the hydroback. Maybe the technical name for the cable is the hydroback cable?

On the cables, Keith at PT said that they only use an 82 in cable, and a 96 in The 96 in cable cost about $128.00
The purpose of that spring assembly at the end of the tram cable, is to adjust the center of the cable. Other wise, if the PT creeps forward or back, this spring assembly is adjusted so that there is no creep in what we know as neutral. or center. One should be careful of playing with this. If it is off center, it will start to move as soon as you crank the PT.

I haven't taken things apart yet, but the centering devise might be reusable. That reminds me that I measured from tip to tip including the spring assembly, therefore, a cable length of 82 in would be about right for me.

You are right about the price, I think that it is a little steep, but it is a safety thing. If it sticks in the wrong position, you would have to shut off the engine to stop. I don't know if the brakes would hold if cable is stuck full forward.

Thanks, my spelling was off. I was typing Hydraback instead of Hydroback. Where did that word come from? Is it in any manual?

I replaced my hydroback cable in my 1430 a few months back. I also retained the original centering device. Was told from PT it did not need to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I will try and lube it first, and if that don't solve the problem, I will purchase a new cable.

I have no earthly idea about the origin of that term. My unit doesn't have one, so there's no mention in my "manual."

Reminds me of Gatorback fan belts... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi JJ - the hydroback is a commercial centering device take a look at http://controls.tuthill.com/Support/eLibrary/PDFs/Hardware/Hardware.pdf. I have cleaned and lubed mine a couple of times. The hydroback has some pretty strong springs, and when it is dry and dirty it will be harder to move. I used some Reese teflon hitch ball lube. Had one cable failure - tractor goes to neutral courtesy of the hydroback, and would not go forward (no pull with a broken cable!), but would back up (the ends are contained by the cable sheath). Kinda convenient since I had the grapple bucket in a big firepile at the time! Check the bolt on the tram pump lever while you are in there - I have had a failure in that area, and now I change it every 50 hours when doing filter maintanance. I use the grade 8 stuff from TSC and buy a longer bolt to get full shank in the shaft and lever area and cut to length .

Good luck!

Don

If the cable is not broke I would definitly clean it up and spray it with a lubricant that wouldn't atract dust for that price. The reason I thought about the bycycle cable is that I use one to operate a table model biscuit joiner and it has worked fine, but that is definitly not the same as operating a heavy peice of machinery like the pts and safe is always better than sorry.
