Cabrio Washer Tub Bearings

Look around on-line for replacement parts. They usually have diagrams that I find helpful but taking some photos might help you remember how it came apart should you choose to repair it yourself.

The last appliance we purchased was a Samsung fridge at Lowe's. After reading good and bad on this and other brands, I bought the extended warrenty. Two years out and trouble free. Guess those days of an appliance lasting 20 years are gone?

Thanks for posting about bearings. Have the Sears version -Oasis. We haven't had bearing problems yet but control problems abound. Have learned to unplug for at least 45 sec to "reset" the computer, then jump start the "start" switch with a screwdriver. Was going to buy new computer & switchboard until I saw the cost & read how quickly they fail again. Piece of very expensive junk.
Our "throw away world" is a little out of control. MikeD74T

Control problem update: thru time I discovered the computer section is OK but the switches on the other circuit board are failing. I've become quite adept at jumping the switch terminals with a flat blade screwdriver. Bought a package of 5 switches from Radio Shack for about $4 & will attempt replacement soon. Still has not improved my opion of Oasis/Cabrio. MikeD74T

there's a lot of these bearing failures, so i'm seeing a lot of
parts on back order, (the entire tub)

some other forums have hinted to a bearing replacement
and special tool, but it was preliminary info and nothing
had been formally released by whirlpool

i guess i'm hearing more and more about whirlpool
not taking much care of customers in cases like this,
and they keep sending me ext warranty offers, which
are starting to get under my skin since the fine print says
any known problem at purchase wont' be covered.
the only reason they are sending me offers is because i
called to ask about the problem and now they have my info.

so, i keep waiting to hear of a bearing replacement instead
of the entire tub at $250 parts.

:(

Update:
I tore the machine apart over the weekend, took out the inner tub,
and removed the drive hub off the bottom,, drove out the shaft,
and bearings. there are 2 bearings, a 6005 and 6006 bearing,
with the top one showing some light rust. the seal is a little
different than what I have seen, i will try to post a pic, but
there is a groove/lip in the inside surface of the seal (the seal
is rather thick, 1/2 inch or so) and inside that groove/lip
was quite a bit of grease. i did not see any spring, although
the bottom of the seal has a large channel around the
bottom face of the seal.
anyway, i need to find new bearings, and want to get the
best I can that can hold up to a little moisture, (i didn't see
evidence of a leak, but again the machine hadn't been used in
a few months). the seal may have to be re-used, didn't suffer
any damage in the tear down, but I can't seem to find that seal
on the internet anyplace, haven't called any supply shops yet
though.
so what type of bearing would be best? sheilded? is there a higher
quality that might hold up better? the machine does spin 1000 rpm
on the spin cycle.

Does the seal extend past the bearing race? Judging by your description, the bearing may be standard - but with a custom seal possibly?

Purchased a new Cabrio in late 2010. 13 months later it started making a noise like 2 pieces of rubber rubbing together while spinning. Luckily we had bought an extended warranty for the machine so we called warranty company and they sent a repairman out to look at it. He stated we could have bearing issue but the noise was coming from tub seals going bad.
He said usually when they replace tub seals they replaced the transmission also as an assembly. Stated parts were cheaper than the labor required to tear down and replace seals. Got a call a few days later from warranty company that it was more cost effective just to pay us for washer and scrap it out than to repair unit.
14 months old and already scrapped out. To their credit the warranty company did what the contract said they had an option to do and paid us for the machine.

another update
i received the bearing kit, and installed
the parts, new bearings/shaft/seal.
tried the washer quickly yesterday and
it sounded good. i did not buy their
"install" kit, which was a set of long
threaded rod and bearing presses, i was
able to set the bearings without any problem,
have done it in machinery for years without using
a press so this should be just fine also.

so far, happy with the cost of the repair, less than $70.
just my time, and the downtime while i waited for the
kit to come out.

You say these bearings cost $250? So, they are making them out of gold now?

That tank is horizontal with the weight on that bearing it would have to be made well to last any time.
